Group, I would be happy for a hint how to read out the shutter actuations of the R-D1 (updated to V2 firmware) I just bought.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I don't think they record it!

I read somewhere about an exif readout program (Opanda PowerExif) which is supposed to display this, but I can't find it there....

When i look at an RD-1 file's image info in photomechanic there is a field called "Frame #" which looks like it might be the shutter actuations. However, when I pull it up in Photoshop I can't find that same info...
If you don't have photomechanic you might try various programs that display EXIF info and see if one shows that field...

if you use Irfanview www.irfanview.com
when you open one of your unprocessed pictures.. just press E and scroll to the bottom where it will say total pictures

Thanks Jonas,
I'm speechless - I just bought a R-D1(s) with just 130 actuations!!! No wonder it looks MINT in all aspects!!
PowerExif does not show a corresponding field.

I had suggested Opanda for Windows and Graphic Converter for Macs as possibilities on another thread before my used R-D1 arrived. I know they both worked for my Nikon D70, showing a field called something like "total shutter actuations". But Graphic Converter doesn't show this with the R-D1 and I don't have Windows anymore.
Unless one of you guys is willing to change "sequential numbering" to off in the basic setup menu, reformat the card, take a photo, and then read that file, doesn't the possibility exist that some or all of these programs are just reading the file number?
Sequential numbering is "on" by default so I choose to believe I got a used one with 770 total actuations, but I don't want to try the above and possibly lose my only (real or hoped for) total count. Does this make sense?

Well, i just switched sequential number off, and took another pic on a different freshly formatted card. The file numbering reset to 0001, and indeed the "Frame #" field was reset to 0001 as well.
However, when I switched sequential numbering back on, still using the new card, both the file number and "frame #" field went back up to where it had previously left off.... although it appears that it did not count the frame that was taken when seq numbering was off.
So I guess that doesn't necessarily tell you anything useful...

Neither Photomechanic nor Exiftool show a frame number. (Photomechanic indicates a "Frame #" field, but there is no such entry in the EXIF record of R-D1 images - neither JPEG nor RAW.) By the way, Exiftool is an excellent utility which also allows writing of various , including GPS location from a recorded track file. - Børre

Thanks. I had downloaded Photo Mechanic when I read your earlier post. Sure that's useful! I'm afraid member Socke might be correct. Unless someone can repeat this test with a different program and get a different result, programs like PM are just telling the number of shots taken with sequential numbering on, although since it's the default setting...
I'm just up the beach from you in Venice. How bout this weather lately! Focusing these things in bright sunlight is impossible!

[Edit] Thanks borrel!

I'm sorry borrel, but the frame# is shown using Photomechanic in the EPS files my R-D1 produced and in the NEF files my Nikon D70 produced. Since I know for sure how many actuations my D70 has, I would take for certain, that the frame# the R-D1 shows, is also correct.

I have downloaded the newest version of IrfanView (v3.98) - there is a window opening when typing E (did not with my older Irfan version) - but where in that window can I find the tortal of images?
TIA

After the 'E', press 'I' or click on the Exif tab at the bottom.Didier said:I have downloaded the newest version of IrfanView (v3.98) - there is a window opening when typing E (did not with my older Irfan version) - but where in that window can I find the tortal of images?

-edit- but I don't see the number of actuations there???
-edit2- however, I see that exif tag $E80 will show the frame number on Canon cameras, but does not work for the Epson, AFAIK
-edit3- actually, I think I'm talking crap here, sorry. The $E80 tag doesn't work on my Canon 1D files, though it is documented in the help files. In the exif spec, the image number is tag no 0x9211, which is decimal 37,393 - but that just comes up blank. So I'm stuck; I can't see how you get the number of actuations in Irfanview. Any suggestions?

Shoot first, think later
So... no way to tell?
So... no way to tell?
A potential buyer of my RD1 asked about total number of actuations on the R-D1, I have looked through the rd1 forum but nowhere can I find a conclusive answer. Is there a confirmed/conclusive way to tell? - Thanks!

If you leave the battery out long enough for the camera to forget the date and time settings, I think it also might forget the sequential-number setting, so I don't know how reliable any of this data would be as a guide to a camera's "mileage."

Have tried the actual version of Irfan, Opanda and Photomechanic. Irfan and opanda showed no results, tried all modes, couldn't find any total frames.
Photomechanic showed the number of frame: #0006 for jpg 0006
BUT: this is the sixth shot after the firmware update - I guess the camera has lost the the informations of shutter actuations before the update. I have no shots from before the update as I did it first when I received the R-D1.
It's recommendable to check this before updating the firmware.

There's no fool proof way of telling the number of actuations. The R-D1 simply doesn't have such a facility available for us the user. Perhaps Epson can read it in maintenance mode but I very much doubt they'll ever make that available for any repair shops, let alone for us.
