I'm overhauling my Leica III (the one also called model F), the pre-war type. I can't get the film advance knob off. I have looked under the set screw, but I haven't found anything there to solve the issue. I don't want to apply excessive or unnecessary torque to the knob, as it still engages at least one cog in the mechanism.
None of the instructions I have seen on the web deal with this particular part.
Does it screw or lift off? Do I need to do anything else than remove the set screw?

While I havn't disassembled that particular model, in all of the russian/japanese leica copies I have, the advance knob just screws off counterclockwise after the set screw is removed. If I'm worried about stripping any of the other gears its connected to I try to unscrew it while holding takeup spool spindle from the bottom (may be easier to hold if the body shell is removed).
Here's a link I found of someone fixing the same part on a nicca/tower iiis.

I'm sure other members here will have a better description to how to do it than me..

Thanks,
I have removed the inner body from the shell for easy access to the advance spool.
I tried what you said, but this only unscrewed the spool stem from the large cog inside the mechanism. The advance knob above didn't move.
Any other suggestions?

According to the above book the advance knob is screwed counter-clockwise after either backing out or removing the setscrew.
Good luck.

Thanks, guys. I put a drop of oil into the set screw hole and let it sit for a while. After grabbing the take-up gear with a piece of rubber, I was able to unscrew the knob.
