Hi, I'm new here, though not new to rangefinder cameras. Recently I CLA-ed my FED 3b, which included shutter adjustment as well as rf adjustment. The shutter was soooo noisy and difficult to cock when I bought the camera. Now it is much much smoother and quieter, but I don't know if the speeds are right.

I wanted to ask this: How would you test the shutter for evenness of exposure on 10 exposures?

Sure I will take some pictures to test the rangefinder, so there will be about 10 frames left to test the shutter. I thought about shooting a wall at different shutter speeds to see if it causes banding or exposes the entire frame evenly.

BTW: I have an Industar 61 and a Jupiter 8. The Industar has been CLA-ed as well, Jupiter is untouched. When I adjust the rf for Jupiter it is slightly off with Industar (about 5cm at 1m) and vice versa. I have it adjusted for the Jupiter and in case of Industar rely on DOF.

Thanks a lot. It's great.

The last idea, about the evenness, is usable, but the first part about exact shutter speeds is not, as I am in Slovakia, Europe, where we use PAL system as TV standard. In the US it is NTSC. These two have different frequency (PAL = 50Hz, NTSC 60Hz).

But still it gave me good ideas how to do it. Thanks again.

This worked for my Zorki 3. Find a busy corner with traffic and an evenly lit day (no strong contrasts) and then expose from (say) 1/1000 @ F2.8 down to 1/30 @ F16 in 7 steps. Each step is the same exposure value film-wise but a different combination of aperture and speed, and will show quite well in the blurriness of the moving vehicles and the depth of field in each photo.

Have the film processed and printed without correction (tell them its a test film). The result should be 7 prints of equal density and appearance and will confirm your shutter speed/F stop settings are accurate within acceptable limits.
