I just ordered a Canon 7 off of ebay, and I was wondering how exactly you meter with it, I know that you adjust your shutter speed to get the aperture setting you desire. But does the meter only go down to f/2.8? and what are the black and white bars used for on the meter? Ill mainly be shooting with a 35 f/1.7

The meter goes to .095 for the dream lens. There are two scales - orange for low light and white for normal - select the meter sensitivity with the switch on the back.

The bars are a range indicator for each aperture - observe where the needle is and follow the guideline to read the aperture.

See the manual here - http://www.butkus.org/chinon/canon/canon_7/canon_7.htm

Also - don't count on that meter working or being slide-film-accurate, many have died or degraded by now.

I just sold mine on that site, strangely enough, and it's meter was as accurate as you would expect from such an old camera. About 1 stop off in very bright sun and OK the rest of the time. But I ignored it when I was out shooting because it is just faster to use a hand held meter. Where the Canon's meter comes in handy is when you go to take photos and discover that you've left your meter at home, which I did recently. It was great to have the meter on the camera then.

Hope you like yours. I found the quality to be very good, almost as good as a Leica. And you can run around w/o the lens cap on and not have to worry about burning a hole in it's metal shutter. Great cameras.

I also own a 7 and confirm what has been said. However I have found that my meter is very accurate which did surprise me for this type and age item. I suggest you test it against your hand held and see for yourself.

Steve I think I purchased your camera. I used my sisters (Amy) ebay and paypal account to get it. I just saw that you shipped it, Thank you so much! I too will most likely be using a hand held, or metering with my Bessa. I bought is as a back up for my road trip this summer. You say that it is about a stop off in bright sun, is it usually over or under a stop?

dear young friend, I just visited your flickr -- there are some really elaborated pictures!

but... what happens to the birds and squirrels?
