just got my s&w 40.5 w hood for the rokkor 40.
it measures 2.5 inches across and seems like it's wider than it needs to be to do the job.
in checking the archives on other 40.5 hoods, the vented version from american eagle seems less wide and is reported to work just fine.

can someone measure the front their vented hood for me?

much appreciated.

Hey Joe

Hey Joe

joe,

I have the 43mm vented hood from heavystar on my Nikkor 50mm lens. The hood takes a 55mm Canon snap on lens cap like they were made for each other. Which is a good thing and very handy. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to use a cap on the lens without removing the hood. Not exactly the answer you wanted. I hope this helps.

sounds like it's considerably less wide than the non vented one.
this one looks like it would take a 60 or 61mm cap

Some camera shops have lots of hoods on pinboards cardboard boxes.
Brousing if you live near to big town is cheap, of they have a hood in 43mm or 46 all you need is a step ring.
I collect hoods, Kim just sold me his Canon kit residue and threw in his series hoods collection whooooooooo.

P.S. my 40.5 mm hoods are all smaller than 55mm I'll measure and report, earliest Tuesday PM, sorry.

but i'm wanting a smaller hood noel, a 43 or 46 would be wider still.
we have a camera store like that here but finding these oddball items is getting harder and harder.

I just measured my S&W vented hood for 40.5mm and it is 2.23 in across the outside. This was using a digital caliper.

My 43mm vented hood measures 2.24 inches and my 39mm vented hood measures 2.23 inches. A tiffen series 6 vented hood for 40.5 measures 2.475 inches.

even though they are cheap, it might just be too silly to buy another hood for such a small difference.
but this one does block the finder just a bit and that small difference might make for an unblocked view.

My 46mm screw in hood is 55mm it is a Contax G CC1 I use it on a J12 with a 40.5 to 46mm step, (or my J3).
For the 50mm lenses I have a selection of hoods that are deep and narrow, some are not compatible with the J3 1.5 - they will vignette. All are junk shop finds. I think the 40.5 hood is about 40mm deep and 55mm wide, it is too deep for the J3, it is a Hoya.

P.S. I dont mind blocked finders I normally use both eyes

blocked finders i can normally live with but with the r4 i would prefer to block as little as possible. that's why i bought all the tiny cv lenses.
and i'm a left eyed shooter.

Try the heavystar 40.5mm WIDE ANGLE, non-vented hood.
See pictures on the camera and Rokkor in the 40mm test thread.

Roland.

I can see the left eye would be a problem, but have you tried both eyes open and right eye in the finder, it took me a long time to use both eyes.

Focusing would be difficult.
