Hey guys,

Firstly, I used this forum as a tool in my decision-making process when I set about to purchase the Zorki-4 which sits staring at me now. Secondly, I got a freakin' Zorki-4 staring at me ! 😀

Got it delivered today, and just wanted to say that I'm looking forward to hanging around the forum here as a registered poster.

It's my first rangefinder...ok details: Zorki-4 w/Jupiter-8 50mm (silver finish) and a beautiful leather case. Needs some cleaning and the take-up spool is cracked in places but still useable.

Here's my first question (and I've pre-Googled this): the ring that's concentric to the shutter control - I've read in various places that this adjusts flash sync, but all I see is a sizeable notch, followed by numbers 0 -> 25 (?!).
Second question: one thing I don't notice in the manuals I've downloaded is the concentric ring around the shutter release button which seems to be able to turn towards one of two Cyrillic letters "P" and "D" (in Roman terms). What is this for?

Once again - very excited to be in this situation - thanks to all for their opinion-sharing, and I look forward to jamming on stuff in the near future.

Cheers,

Matt

Okay, I just gotta say that right off I'm sensing some real issues here, especially in the "making good decisions" department. It's like this Matt, we all use this forum as a tool in our decision-making process, but to avoid coming face to face with our mis-guided and wasted childhood that has drawn us all to the FSU trough, we never actually put that in print. 😎 If one of our wives accidently read it, the jig would be up and we'd all be grounded from RFF for like a week or a lifetime or some stuff.

Anyway, welcome aboard, glad you're here, hope you enjoy it because you can never leave. Sounds like the guys have you all lined out on the Z4's bells & whistles so get out there and get to shootin'.

I believe your questions have all be answered correctly, but you can get more information concerning the Zorki 4 at this website http://www.photoethnography.com/equipment.html

Click on more in the list of cameras at the left and in the new list that comes up, click on Zorki 4.

I think it is a fine camera. Have fun with it

Almost 25 y. ago, when I bought my Kiev4 people stared at me like if I was kind of ET.
I never regretted the decision I took, and I´m sure you wouldn´t ever: the J-8 50/2 is an excellent lens which will reward you with excellent pictures, no matter if LTM or Contax mount and the Zorki an excellent choice by itself.
Like you, this forum helped me a lot in decision making several times, for what I´m particularly gratefull.
Today becoming an RF user is something people see at least as unusual or weird, but I guess this is kind of a joyfull and healthy infection that´s spreading all over.
Welcome to the forum, enjoy RFs, and get ready for your first GAS attack!

Thanks to everyone for the replies (and links/encouragement/humour). As of last night, I won an eBay auction on a universal viewfinder as well (!). So, now there's no excuse not to go out and break the Zorki's cherry (in so many words).

I also ordered a M39 -> M42 adapter ring, as I also own/use a Krasnogorsk-3 (16mm movie camera). I'm hoping to be able to port the Jupiter-8 to the K-3 with the adapter, which is something I've been meaning to do (getting primes for the K-3 rather than relying on the Meteor zoom lens).

Prior to the Zorki purchase, my only other 35mm camera has been my trusty Nikon 401s, which I picked up 15 years ago and have been using ever since. One of the reasons for my recent purchase was that I wanted a totally manual camera that wasn't going to try to override my aperature/shutter settings. However, to be fair, the 401 is a nice camera and has served me well.

Oh, that sounds tempting, but that's the day I start a week-long intensive @ Humber (writer's workshop). Still - fill me in on the time and place, and I'll try to work it in.
