How's everyone scanning their Negs/Slides?

I have one-hour place do the processing/cut/sleeve negatives ONLY. Costs $2. For B&W, I process my own in D-76 mostly. I scan with Minolta Scan Dual IV or Epson PHOTO Perfection 2400 with TPU (medium format only). I run Linux and I use Vuescan. Works for me, and cheap as could be.

Best Regards,

Hi JoeyJoe, I have the same Scanner, and I scan 300 DPI target file, Letter Size. That get's out the 1600 and 3200 DPI of the scanner, otherwise youll get Interpolated DPI`s.
For sharpness set Blur Mask to high. If that isn´t sharp enough you can sharpen in photoshop. This scanner is quite good for scanning negatives and getting images to the web, for print's larger than letter page you should get a professional scanner.
You can try Vuescan that Is independent from the scanner software.

Good luck.

Pablo

Minolta scan dual IV, Vuescan (like others have said, canned software sucks here). MF negs go in my epson 2450. A good Lab, one that cleans your negs before scanning, might be the best way though.

I use the Kodak photo CD-so far- and for the web it works fairly well-not great but OK-for "real" BW I send the film to Vermont Color and they do a fine job of dev-print-scan. For 120 I haven't figured out a solution, yet. At some point I am going to have to upgrade this computer I'm using and I will be looking for a scanner also. For prints up to 8x10(letter size) I use the local 1hour place and for the (infrequent) larger prints I send the neg to a good mail order lab.
Way back when(10-15 years ago) I had a girlfriend who worked in a copy store. They had the current best color copires which had film adaptors so I could get 8x10 photcopies. Horrible results but I found them useful to decide if a particular neg was worth the time/expense to get a real enlargement made(I was limited by my wallet to dev and contact sheet then). The photo CD serves the same purpose now. I own all the gear for a wet darkroom but it's all packed into a rather large box--I simply do not have the room to set it up. That should change by the summer.

I use a Minolta Dimage Scan Multi Pro (I think I have the names right!) to scan 35mm & 120. Like all medium format-capable film scanners, it's not cheap, & it was big jump from my old Dimage Scan Dual, but w/the all the money I spend on cameras & lenses & film, it made no sense to skimp on the scanner, particularly as I do almost all of my printing from scans.

I process my own film and scan on a Epson 4180. I tried a local b&w lab, but the scanning was TERRIBLE. When I saw the results, I went right out and bought the 4180. I chose the 4180 with the intent on it being a b&w only scanner, and because it does 6x6 and 35mm slde and negs. I'm generally happy with this workflow and the scanner. I know full-well that there are better scanners out there. Most of my work goes into PS for cropping and contrast/brightness adjustments. The end result, like you joeyjoe, is online presentation. My goal is to eventually get a good photo printer.

Oly ES-10 SCSI. It's a low resolution (1770 ppi) dinosaur, but with a little tweaking the scans are good enough for fairly decent 8x10" b/w prints on my HP 7960.

Jon, very nice shot. My sister and bro-in-law were also in rome very recently(his 50th birthday present) but I haven't seen any of their pictures yet. 🙁
Did you get any odd reactions from the airport security folks about your camera? The last time I flew anywhere I had in my carry on a TLR and the guy running the xray machine just didn't quite believe it was a camera so I had him take a picture of me with it.

For 35mm I use a Konica Minolta 5400 film scanner. Slow if ICE or grain reducer is used, but high quality scans.

Gene,
Think about buying this one, how much time does it need for a colour neg at 2700 dpi and at 5400 dpi and ICE working ?

Thanks ! Bertram

At 5400dpi and ICE it could easily take 15-20mins per neg. I don't know about 2700dpi. Without ICE, it's about one minute. I hear the new model they're releasing is substantially faster in the scanning.

I recently purchased an Epson 4180 scanner that has holders for 35mm negatives, slides and MF negatives. It's supposed to scan at 4800x9600 but if I scan MF with anywhere near those settings, the file size is enormous and little is gained over a much lower setting. Scanning in grayscale also reduces file size.

Another option I just learned of while reading Shutterbug is using a camera bellows and a macro lens with a Nikon d70.

Good enough for web shots where file size and resolution is not as critical.

I will be experimenting with my Canon G2 to see if I can do the same.

Wow, Lots of feedback. I think Im going to give my scanner another try; I'll apply unsharp mask in PS instead of letting the Epson Scan program do it for me. I'll also try a lower res. since I'm only using them for web presentation. I can definately see the need to invest in a nice film scanner at some point...

...but alas I need to buy textbooks for next quarter soon.

I have an old Canon FS2710 which is connected to a Dell Inspiron 8200 via an Adaptect PCMCIA to SCSI card. Works good for me.
This is Fuji Sensia 100 mostly:

Edit:

I just watch The Agency in TV. I need that software! Then my old HP Scanjet IIIc would be suficient

I have an Epson 2580 flatbed scanner which seems to be OK but not outstanding. The scanner freezes up with Vuescan so I'm stuck with the Epson software. I'm still not sure if my problems are caused by user error or if the scanner just isn't up to scanning fil properly. I'm suspecting both; once I started to understand unsharp mask in PS, my scanning results improved dramatically although they still won't be adequate for anything other than web use.

I have a minolta Dimage Scan Elite II. I had almost given up on it until I found out about Vuescan software. It allowed me to move my scanning from a PC to a Mac and dump the minolta scanning software.
The only problem I have now is that I've started shooting medium format. I'll have to start looking for another scanner which is at least as good as my Dimage. Any ideas?

I dunno 'bout that Bill. I use a 99$ (Canadian!) HP 4470c flatbed that came with a 35mm neg/slide (XPI) adaptor. Only does 1200x1200 but actually I find that is just fine. I use GIMP on WinXP.
