I've been messing about with NEX over the past six months, and though Sony has a great sensor, I've become a less interested in adapted lenses, and more interested in native glass, which Sony lacks. And given the GX-1 and forthcoming Oly offerings, plus the really nice new lenses everyone is putting out, I am planning to return to m4/3 for my autofocus needs.
I'd like people's impressions of the Panasonic/Leica 25mm Summilux. It isn't that much more expensive than the 20/1.7, which I used to have and quite liked. Who here has compared the two? What are the lenses strengths and weaknesses?
It seems to me that the Oly 12/2 and 45/1.8, combined with the Pana 25/1.4, could make an amazing little kit.

That's my feeling. From what I've seen, the 25/1.4 is a pretty good lens.
12/2, 25/1.4 and eventually the new 60 Macro was what I have been contemplating.
I have to have a big sale first though.

I read an interesting review here: http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Panasonic_Leica_DG_Summilux_25mm_f1-4_H-X025/
I decided to give it a try

Does the GX-1 feel unbalanced with it?

it sure is another feeling but it's not unbalanced for me!
No other statements possible as I got it only a few hours ago ;-)

I'm still hoping to get some firsthand opinions about this lens.

It certainly has great reviews. It is considerably heavier than the 20/1.7 (510 grams vs. 100 grams) -- still if you feel the need for speed . . .

Well, I'm a little vexed/surprised that Photozone and DPReview haven't given it a serious look yet. It's been out for quite a while.

Hmm. I thought I saw a photozone.de review in English just a couple of days ago at:
http://www.photozone.de/olympus--four-thirds-lens-tests/509-leica25f14.
At the moment, though, I can't get the page to load.
A friend in NY is weighing the 25/1.4 against the 20/1.7, which is the discussion that generated the weight comparison I posted earlier.

If so, don't know how I missed it! It isn't loading for me either, but I'll check back. Are you sure it isn't for the four thirds (as opposed to micro four thirds) version?

yes, that's for the 4/3ds version...the m4/3 is no doubt much lighter than 510g.

Just checked the Pana site, it is only 200 grams!

what I can say is, it's definitely no more pocketable!
The GF1 combined with the pancake 14 or 20 is a combo which you really can carry in your jacket, but combined with the 1,4/25 it is not so anymore. For me.
Depth of field is noticeable smaller, differences in picture quality on a monitor are hard to see. Maybe I took wrong pics for a comparison, I only had few time for trying the lens.
In the link posted before you can see the differences between taking pics with the different focal lenghts. It is more than I expected. In fullframe this would be a 40 lens compared to a 50.
First I thought I would sell my pancake but now I am not sure about it anymore.

The Summilux suggested by Benjamin Marks belongs to the 4/3 category, the older D type, NOT for the m43 without an adapter.. The new Summilux is the DG, direct mounting on the m43 and it is believed to be a better one than the D.. For a comparison test against the Canon 50L see:

The images look great...but I decided to go with the Nokton 25 for now, as long as I'm using a non-pocketable lens. We'll see how it goes...

Does the Panaleica 25mm have the stabilizer the 14-42 X lens has?
Thanks

I just looked at the site via the link and it says it's the micro 4/3:

But that's just what it says, so could be wrong, as sometimes happens
