HU: 40mm Elmarit-C

A cheaper version of the Summicron-C intended for the French market in an effort to keep the price of the CL below 1000 francs. The aperture lever was located in the wrong place hence the Elmarit-C was never marketed. Most were sold to Leitz personnel. According to van Hasbroeck only 400 were made.

Note that the serial number is beyond the range that van Hasbroeck mentions in his book "A History Illustrating every Model and Accessory".

"never knew this lens existed"

As Treb has mentioned only 400 were made and were mainly sold to employees when the lens was ditched but I disagree that this lens was meant only for the french market, that simply isnt the case. The lens was meant to be for all markets with the CL but its optical performance was somewhat lacking that the Summicron-C came about being faster and better optical performance. It fetches big money being a rare lens but is actually outclassed by the 40mm f2.8 lens in a Canonet QL28 that can be bought for under $20.00. So it makes no sense to buy one as a user lens so leave it for the collectors.
