Just seen advertised in this weeks Radio Times.New six part TV series starting with Fox Talbot and ending in the digital age.Gary Winogrand is listed for part 4 along with Robert Frank and Walker Evans! So, something for us in the UK
starting Thursday 25th 9pm.

Regards
Steve

Don't know if this is part of the same series but I've just seen a DVD of James Ravilious, a great photographer who lived in Devon and he's on BBC4 on Nov 23rd at 7.30pm

Also, for those in the UK, Amazon.co.uk currently have the accompanying book by Gerry Badger at half price £12.50 RRP £25
I got the book yesterday, its excellent -really in depth, covers much more than the hour long episode can, well worth the money.

Its a good series, nice detail, focusing on two or three key photographers from each period. This coming Thursday's episode will feature Robert Frank and other war photographers. Episode 2 last week (repeated this Monday @ 8pm) was particularly relevant as it detailed how compact 35s (i.e. Leicas) helped revolutionise photography. Slight factual error that they chose to illustrate inter-war Leica use with an M3 but I'm sure most won't have noticed.

The first run of each episode is followed by a half hour documentary about a specific photographer - this week it was Jacques-Henri Lartigue.

For those outside of the UK they will be findable on various TV download sites if you're a BitTorrent user...

I missed the first episode as I was in Portugal that week, thankfully I caught the repeat as its well worth watching. Having seen the second episode and eagerly awaiting the third I've just ordered the book - half price is great but I'm far too impatient to wait 4-6 weeks...oh well, it can be a Christmas present to myself.

If you get the chance to check this series out its well worth an hour of your time!

I've seen both episodes on BBC4 and it's worth having a look at what's on immediately afterwards. The first episode was followed by a brilliant (in my opinion) documentary about Chambre Hardman. Last week, as has already been mentioned, was JH Lartigue.

I've got my 'Sky' digibox set to record via series link. Even my missus is finding the series interesting and entertaining. She's also offering to buy me camera stuff for Christmas........

If you can get access to it, watch it.

Paul

PS - thanks for the heads up about the book to accompany the series. I might be paying a visit to the local bookstore this weekend.

As has been said, the books half price on Amazon - though there is a wait as I mentioned above.

What part of Essex are you from Paul? I'm an old Essex boy hiding out in sleepy Suffolk!

Tonight's was excellent and probably the most essential of the series for people here - HCB, Capa, W Eugene Smith were the usual suspects of course but there was plenty of new stuff that I wasn't aware of. Certainly a series to archive to DVD :)
