Agreed, Hungry eye is one of the best .Andre Kertesz : His Life and Work is my all time favorite.

The books came in the mail today. 🙂 Hungry Eye (in paperback) is small, but the reproduction is very good. Would be convenient for reading in bed. 😉

Rene Burri's book looks excellent. I can't wait to go into it in detail. Remy, PM me you mailing address if no one has offered yet, and I will find out how much shipping to you would cost.

Thanks for the heads up on the Kertesz book. I was able to grab the last copy for $7. I just browsed through it - it may have been the best buy of the lot.

Got the Eggleston book today, Ray. Very nice indeed. Thanks again for the suggesiton. I'll offer one up for you: You may want to check out Stephen Shore's Uncommon Places (if you haven't already); it seems to spring from the Eggleston lineage.

BTW, a buddy of mine has the Koudelka 'Chaos' book. Wow! Really nice printing. A big book with lots of rich dark tones (almost too dark). I may pick that one up, too.

I really like Koudelka's work. Can you or anyone else recommend one of his books. (other than Chaos) I'm finding it somewhat difficult to find them.

🙂

Ray, I have been thinking about getting Chaos too. Looking at the prices of Koudelka's books (Exiles, Gypsies), it may be good to get this before it goes out of print.

This may be a smaller book, but it gives a good overview of the different periods in his work. It would probably be a good complement to Chaos:

Lucky you found one. The only used copies I have seen are a handful in French.

Ray, I did pick up Chaos. I think your rationale for getting it is good. 🙂 (besides being a excellent book) Amazon has both Chaos and the book you pointed to, as a package for a good price, btw.

I decided to get it too. Now, I am afraid I am goind to start lusting for a panoramic camera. 🙂

i didn't realize this, but i also just got a $175-200 book for $30 on ebay (sally mann's "sweet silent thought"). =)

Wandered into San Francisco MOMA bookstore on my lunch break last week and ended up walking out with Daido Moriyama's Stray Dog and Nobuyoshi Araki's Subway Love. These are certainly not everyone's cup of tea. However, I can't keep my nose out of them! 🙂

I was tempted by Friedlanders 'Apples and Pears' (title?), but SF MOMA had Moriyama heavily displayed and the advertising got me.

Any of you who have Walker Evan's 'Many are Called' may find Araki's 'Subway Love' interesting. It's basically the same project...but different.

🙂

Just bought "Many are called" on ebay for $13.00. I dont really trust buying cameras there too often, but have gotten some good book deals recently.

That's a pretty good price! It's an good book. It is what it is: subway portraits—just like Araki's. There's not much variety in Evans' book, Araki's has more, but I like both books. They make an interesting side-by-side comparison.

Based on the description on photoeye, they are. Click on "UK printing" in the original post.

I don't know if the print quality is different. Maybe someone in the UK that has it can comment.

Robert Capa The Definitive Collection (Hardbound), remaindered for $19.95 (from $60) at Hamilton Books. Says "new" but shopworn. You can order it through amazon.

Just picked up the latest Lisette Model book. It's a biggie. No real relevations here. If you're familiar with Model then you've seen every image in this book. I have the tiny Phaidon 55 book, and an old Camera magazine, both well-thumbed and dog-eared. However, the difference here is the size. Finally, a chance to *see* Model's images in print big, big, big with all the delicious grain and grittiness.

🙂
