I would avoid buying such conversions off ebay and that includes the black paint Summicrons. This one was clearly an M3 version with goggles removed. See the .65 on the scale. They plated it to hide the surgical scars.

So, no authentic gold lens/body kit was produced. A "gilded lily".

Why? I ask. Only someone with the (bad) taste of a Paris Hilton could love something like this.
Only thing I can think of that was worse was a Leica iiif someone had desecrated by gold-plating it and putting on a body covering of some hideous psychedelic-colored leopard-skin patterned material. Hurt my eyes to look at it. Hurt my mind too, to think that someone could do something like that to a perfectly good Leica....

I love golllllld!
Unfortunately, I can't afford it -- I'm still paying medical bills resulting from an unfortunate smelting accident. Smoke and a pancake, anyone?

Well seen and noted!! That must most certainly have been the reason for this monstrosity.I would avoid buying such conversions off ebay and that includes the black paint Summicrons. I dunno. If you look at Igor's Cameras listings, he seems to have a bunch of gold plated Leica lenses in both M and LTM mounts. I cannot imagine why someone would want a gold plated Summar, at a cost several times the value of the lens, but there you have it.

Remember when gold jewelry in three colors was the rage (or still is)? One could have white gold, pink gold, and yellow gold on the same necklace. What about tricolor gold plated lenses? Imagine!

Gold plating is actually quite inexpensive. The most expensive part of a plating like this is the prep and number repaint labor. The amount of gold used to plate that lens is most likely barely measurable, probably a micron in thickness or less. I think that plating rarely looks natural and always looks cheap, especially in this case where the results are too orange. That may have to do with a cheaper metal base plating like copper underneath the gold layer. Not trying to sound like an expert here, I just have a little plating experience. Someone probably has more knowledge on the subject.
Oh well, I like my new avatar at least.
