HU: Leica M2 Black- real?

I think it´s real....rusted brass looks like that...becomes grey-green it only get shiny yellow when rubbed.

The back door is not original as many noted and i guess the bottom plate maybe isn´t real as well.

948.601-949.100=m2 schw L 1958

Anyway a closer look to teh engravings should tell clearly if it´s real in a 100%.

Good luck to bidders!

It makes no difference whatsoever regarding internals! It could be a solid block of rust in there. It's value is to a collector or speculator in the serial number and original condition of that top plate. A chrome M2 can be had for 300-500 and just swap the internals. Purchase a rear door with a black paint dial and hey presto it's good to go.
Black paint original cameras are priced out of the normal user bracket now and only those who have had them for a while ie before the silly money will actually be using them.
OR todays buyer has enough money to not bother and just wants to use a BP original.
Most if not everybody lusting after this is dare I say it thinking about profit and investment and not a camera to actually use!
Sadly the originals for the most part have become an investment opportunity rather like the early Porsche 911's I've been looking at. Sooner or later everything becomes a'classic'!!!

This.

OTOH, engravings wouldn't be faked, the fake bit would be in de-chroming a regular M2 and re-painting it black. So engraving quality will not be a tell-tale on a fake-black Leica M.

The rusty internals also are an indication of ling-time moisture issues, as is the grayish rusty brass.

Anyway, it's probably gone to a new owner already, someone who paid enough and quickly enough to be able to secure it.

Good points for sure...I've bid it up a couple of times just to push up the price. I guess I should be careful! I don't see where there is visible rust- let me look again.

I suspect that this will sell outside of eBay...I think it has generated a lot of interest. It will be fun to watch, but I'm not sure I want/need a boat anchor!

Gotta quote myself on this one... it was never going to be a "real" auction. That's why I thought it would be fun to talk about. Someone made "an offer you can't refuse"🙄

I guess there is a chance that it was ended early so it can be re-listed with a higher price and/or BIN.

Engravings.
On the real BP cameras that I've seen the engravings and stampings are deeper and wider because of it. This was I believe because of the paint filling the stampings.
There is a definite rounded top edge to each letter whereas on chromes repainted it's always a sharp edge.

Hey! Where did the deleted post go! Who was that that just said it had been re-listed? Weird!

It looks like it will be re-listed tonight...with more details and an acknowledgement that it was stored in an attic for years.

This is absolutely true. On chrome cameras you cannot feel the stampings with the tip of your finger, but on the real BP cameras you can.

Erik.

The camera will be relisted tonight and i was told by the seller that the current highest offer is $2500, so i guess the BIN price wouldn't be lower than that. Good luck to whoever is interested in getting it !

Seemed to be pretty legit. Why would you only offer local pick up and payment on pick up if you were scamming? You'd say direct deposit and shipped only. And wow, $7600!
