Hi, RF Addict, I saw your helpful post regarding the Epson on the Craig's List in Phoenix. Yes, I am dying to get one. My Leica M4 remains my favorite camera of all tiime, and the three digital cameras I have gone through remain my least. I just don't enjoy diving through screen after screen while the buttons change their functions and my subject grows up, has a baby and moves away... http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/images/smilies/banghead.gif :bang: So I am about to call this person and see if I can land it. I have not been able to find out a lot about RD-1's as used machines. I have studied the new literature quite closely. Could you share any caveats you might know of? I hope I'm being more cautious than paranoid. But I live in the Phoenix area and contacted him asking to view the camera. He responded that he is elsewhere and the camera is now " in the custody" of an ebay seller. But he repeated 3 or 4 times how he could "complete the transaction" immediately and to respond and he will send me details. -Like maybe a cashiers check to a cousin of funds manager in...? Apparently I must complete the transaction in order to see the actual camera. Like I said, being cautious with my $$, no offense intended.

Indeed sounds weird.
I typically like buying through Craigslist because you can see and test the items you are interested in. I got two very nice deals here in Phoenix recently (a Nikon F100 and a Nikon mount Zeiss 50 f1.4). That's why I keep my eye on Craigslist to see what else pops up there.
As with all other transactions, we all need to be very careful and concsious of the fact that there are a lot of crooks out there trying to make a quick profit.

It might be of interest to know that the exact pictures were used in the sale of a used Epson R-D1 from a reputable store in Japan very recently. The bid winner seems to be from Switzerland.

I e-mailed him yesterday, asking if he still had the camera, and he replied, that yes, he still has "the item" but he is at his parents' ranch, with his son, in Texas. He told me the same thing about leaving the camera in the possession of an eBay seller, but he could complete the transaction immediately.
It does sound fishy. I asked him some specific questions about the camera, so let's see if he responds again.

I would say it's more than fishy, the craigslist ad is a straight rip from the Mastsuiya ebay ad!

I got some very good deals through Craigslist - a Nikon F100, a Nikon F2 black and a Zeiss 50mm f1.4 in Nikon mount - all substantially lower than what I would have paid at the famous auction site. But I agree, one has to be very careful. Just like eBay, there are always pranksters out there to get you. The advantage of Craigslist is that the transaction happens locally and you see and inspect whatever you are buying and only after that inspection will money change hands.

Off topic, but Epson RD-1 is a nice camera to use. It is pleasantly similar to my Leicas and has much of the benefits of both the film and digital worlds. The files are quite nice, which is after all the most important thing. cheers

i am curious because i had seen some film on craigslist ,also saw it sold on ebay the week before (same pic). The craigslist seller told me "yes it is sold but i will sell it to you for more money because it is not shipped yet... .(lol..ok dum-dum)
so i contacted ebay Buyers ...this was almost $1000 in film bought by 2 bidders. They were pissed...contacted ebay yadyadyada i contacted police because he had posted it as it was from The U of A, and thats illegal as hell, so they investigated and found the guy was doing something" EVEN MORE ILLEGAL " buy could not tell me what (of course) , and busted him.

I just blew a very similar scam out for a Canon DSLR at a very attractive price. The guy was in England and he had a no risk setup arranged with Royal Delivery. I would send the money to the shpper, but they wouldn't release funds until I saw the Camera... The giveaway... references to a laptop two times in the delivery arrangements. I have a friend who lost $400 on a Macbook with same delivery scheme.
At this rate, a synonym for Craigslist will be "Bendover....."

Nothing wrong with Craigslist, it's the people who use it! Just be careful. It's actually better as you should be able to see it in person. I bought my CV 21/4, 28/1.9, and 35/1.7 on Craigslist. Just so happens the seller is an RFF'er. be buying more as I just bought a M8 today.
