Strange design indeed. The trusswork is pretty unusual (seen in your Flickr album). I thought the curved sides acted like an arch bridge but no they are just weather clapboards.
The older bridges in the US were designed "in isolation" because communication was so slow, so the local engineers just made up trusses that looked like they'd work okay.

The siding on wood bridges is very rarely there for structural integrity. It's just to keep the weather from the main beams.
