I have an I-61 L/D that I haven't used yet - I got it as "new old stock" some months ago, and the focus was a bit stiff (as they often are, I believe). I just tried it yesterday, and in the cold weather it is even stiffer - so much so that the lens unscrews from the body rather than focusing (I guess the yak butter has gone hard).

I seem to remember someone talking about relubing these some time ago, but I can't find anything now - does anyone know where I can get disassembly/relube instructions or know of a thread that discusses it?

Try this link: http://www.mattdentonphoto.com/cameras/industar_relubing/index.html

I followed these instructions to re-lube my I-26M and I-61 lenses last year. It was an easier job than I thought it would be (just don't get distracted when you re-assemble the lens). I used white lithium grease to replace the old grease.

I wonder if Mr. Denton ever lurks on this site? His web pages are great, and he probably has some fans here. 🙂

Just reviving this topic a bit, here. What kind of silicone oil would you use? Thinner oil = better? Will 10wt (some kind of weight index) Silicone Oil do? That's what they sell here for servicing Radio Controlled car shock absorbers...

I would never use oil on a re-lube job. It apears to work in the very short term but will give problems in the longer run. It migrates and will get on the lens elements and also the FSU lenses need something thicker to "pack out" the gaps in the threads. Use a synthetic silocone based grease for the focus helix and a thicker graphite based paste for the diaphragm ring.

Oh ok, thanks for clearing that up. So, silicone based grease for the focus helix... check. No need to lube the diaphragm ring, though. Seems to be in order. Actually, I'll just remove the mount and cleanse the helical threads and grease them, if necessary.

Hi Kim
I have some Sea&Sea (the underwater camera make) silcone grease for lubricating the O rings that seal the camera - do you think this would work to lube a lens?
Thanks nathan

Hi Nathan,
The short answer is I don't know because I haven't tried it. 😱

The important thing is to use a grease which doesn't creep or separate. A useful test is to put a small blob on a piece of paper and leave it for 12-24 hours. If the blob retains it's shape and there isn't a large stain which has spread on the paper, then it should be OK. However, I am not a technician and can only advise on what works for me. You can always try it and if it doesn't work, clean it off and use something else. If you get stauck, send me a PM and I will send a 35mm canister of the stuff I use. 😉
