It was just a marketing firework aiming at people who have limited experience with photography or too much disposable income. There was just no reason whatsoever for someone to buy this - any bottom of the line offer from the big camera manufacturers was miles ahead of it.

I had forgotten all about that! I remember watching videos for it where even the people being paid to talk up the camera seemed extremely hesitant. It was such an obvious dud before it even got into anyone’s hands.

What’s amazing to me is that, in a lot of ways, it was a super workable concept. It’s basically exactly what Fuji has done with the X100 series (i mean, with way fewer gimmicks and a much clearer idea of the value proposition).

Concept was sound but the final product was disappointing.
To be fair if it had been higher spec'd many RFF members would have bought one.

Sadly Yashica is gone. An attempt to revive the brand name gave many people a glimmer of hope. I had a moment of excitement; to think that Yashica might rise from the ashes, a camera Phoenix of some sort. Hell, could a Contax G3 be next? At the time I did the usual google searching thing, and discovered that Yashiaca had been bought and sold (who knows how many times). China? Who else would buy a dead Japanese brand name?

Anyway, I’m not sure of the relevance or reason for reviving this old story now. Boredom? Sometimes dead and gone should remain dead and gone. Of course that’s just me being me.

Well, there is the goofy humor of it. And if we don't remember the mistakes of the past, we might repeat them (or however that old chestnut goes).
And yeah, a Contax G3 would be sweet! But please, oh please, don't mention the word Phoenix! Does anyone remember that line of cheesy SLR cameras, by that name, from about 25 years ago?
