why? you might be asking yourself...

because i am enjoying the leica m8 threads; the issues vs. the decsions threads.

watching those on either side of the argument stating their cases.
'it was a decision!'
'it was a mistake!'

and the passion involved.

living with the cosina vs. zeiss debates brings this joy to my heart.

'the zi is nothing but a rebadged cosina!'
'no, it's a complete redesign!'

i have been frustrated with the ignorance of these arguments from the beginning.
people who have never touched a zi complaining that it's crap, wont last, poorly made...and on and on...

and now it starts again with the m8 and ir filters and magenta casts...

I guess I'm bad too, Joe, as I get the biggest kick out of folk posting extensively about cameras they don't own nor intend to own.

I've been watching the G7 discussions on dpreview. Pretty funny actually. A camera is just a tool. I wonder if in the tool forums people fight over whether a hammer is better than a wrench, or whether phillips head srecwdrivers are better than flat head screwdrivers?

Then, there is film vs. digital....

I want to buy the M8. Leica might have screwed up initally, but they did most what they could to rectify it.

The Ikon is a new camera. Made by Cosina.

there we go, maybe this thread might give Joe smiles...

Joe, you could always ignore it all; after all, it is only a web site. There are a lot of better things to do than concentrate what other folks think of X brand cameras. Shoot a few rolls of film. I hope you cheer up soon.

I enjoyed it for awhile, then stopped reading them ... mostly. I hopped back in one of the threads today, but probably won't any more. I can't afford an M8, likely never will be able to, outside the lottery or inheritance. (Of course, if I worked at a convenience store that is a Lottery Ontario agent, I would have a better chance of winnings...)

My initial interest was borne from a real desire for Leica to hit a home run on this one. Then when the problems arose, it was really interesting to follow the "exchange of views". The psychology of it was pretty interesting.

Now I'm only interested in seeing actual M8 prints and what the effect of the M8 is on digital photography in general.

I have to laugh at the picky nature of some of the folks on photo forums. My wife and I went to a fantastic photo exhibit showing the work of Tony Vaccaro who shot during WWII. We was a soldier in the US army in Europe during the war. He had permission from his commanding officer to carry his camera and document his group during combat. The photographs were as goos as any I've seen form anyone. He actually caught a shot of his good friend at the exact moment he was struck by a fatal bullet. I know this is luck but he captured the shot and 8,000 more. His camera was on display with his images, it was a 1941 Argus C3. I commented to my wife how many of the finest images in history were captured with lesser equipment than anything we use today and yet they managed to capther these fantastic images at the critical moment. I commented this is proof that the equipment does not make the photographer. It doesn't matter if your lens is a v1 summicron 35, CV, ZM, Canon LTM or a asph summilux 35. What matters is the skill and creativity of the person behind the camera.

Well it's like the RD-1. I saw it as the 'new toy' and wanted to see one and take a photo maybe. Thanks to a member here I had a go on the RD-1 and the desire to use one died. I'll want to handle an M8 and then I won't be interested any more. They're out of my budget, I don't want to jump on the bandwagon I just wanna see what the fuss is about.

Course, I have my own woes about what 70 year old piece of kit I buy next, so I have 70 years to catch up on before I consider the new toys :D

I have some photos from WW1, my grandfather's unit-one fellow kept his camera despite orders to turn them in. I guess if one wants to make interesting pictures, it helps to have an interesting life!

i'm actully feeling ok.
i try to read every post as moderator, getting harder these days as we increase in numbers. thank goodness we have a good group here.

Yikes.. with the growing number of active members and topics, that's tough to keep up with. Good luck with it :)

joe, glad to hear that you are feeling OK. Hang in there reading all the M8 posts. All in all, pretty dreary stuff. I forgot that it is your duty to follow all the posts, including those on the M8.

I've been bad too!:( Especially on any filmvsdigital debate. It's sometimes easy to let your fingers type before your brain thinks things out. So from now on i'm gonna try my best to act as a perfect:angel:. BTW this is the best forum on the net period, and all the moderators do a fine job;)

It’s difficult sometimes not to respond to the brand cheerleaders, hubris or shadenfreuder is it? joy when things go wrong for pompous people.
I just imagine they have to wear special outfits and wave pom-poms, works for me
:D

Hm, talking about taking pictures. Here is a thread in a forum which has nothing to do with photography as we understand it here.

The forum is in german with some spanish thrown in for good measure but in this thread it's mostly pictures taken by people who usualy just want to record a moment in time to keep as a memory.

http://www.kubaforen.de/t513757f3292-Mi-Cuba.html

Lots and lots of pictures taken by people who don't think about composition, bokeh, glow, flare etc.pp, just pictures :)

i will never be able to remove this image from my brain or the smile off my face!!
