I've always wanted one of these!
This is it so far. The base is about 31 inches long, the height is about 29 inches.
My God, so have I!! This is a real hobby in the UK. I saw a show a few years ago, where the hobbiest where launching pianos a 1/4 mile or so.
Good luck! You should be proud that you are doing something truly usefull and

COOL! What are you going to fling with it? Disposable cameras if you can figure out a delay of some kind so they'll snap a photo in-flight? Eggs would be fun but messy...water balloons?
Keep us updated, please!

I love the word too. In fact if I was to be reincarnated as a famous photographer, I would prefer to be named Henri Cartier-Trebuchet.

That's hilarious!!!
hmm.. cameras and film canisters.. not a bad not bad
I am going to start with Tennis balls because they won't hurt so much if they do hit something
Golf balls would be fun but yea... that might be kinda dangerous
Tennis ball, dipped in oil and set a blaze right before I fire it.. niiiiiiiiiice...
Why do I have a feeling I am going to end up with a police report for this thing...

And after you build the first trebuchet, you've GOTTA build another one. Only this time bigger. Much bigger!
Me, I built one of these two years ago. It's still sitting in my garage, as it's to large to get into the house. Standing about 6 feet tall, it's also able to lob some pretty large loads. I'm sure it's a baby compared to the VW launcer, but it's still fun. If I get some spare time, I'll snap a pic of it and post it here.

sweeet! Mine is almost done now. I just have to cut the bolts to size and test it and such!

Cool! Have you figured out how to do the sling and release hook? When they built these on "Scrapheap Challenge/Junkyard Wars" a few years ago, those were the hardest things to get right.
I really like the idea of attempting "aerial photography" with one, although finding a camera that can stand up to the acceleration when the sling goes over-center might be a challenge!

I like that idea.. Anyone willing to send me a Leica for a test just PM me for my address

No I have not figured out the hook yet. I have some brass pieces I think I can bend as needed, but I won't be able to do anything with that until I get it all set up and start testing tomorrow.

The sling release really isn't a difficult part to make, but getting it to work correctly can be a challenge. There are a few sites on the web that cover this. On mine, I just used a thin steel rod mounted on the end of the throwing arm, and then slipped a metal ring, attached to the rope for the sling, over it. When the throwing arm reaches a certain point in its travel, the metal ring is cast off, opening the sling.

Trebuchet is simlar to Verdana. I prefer Verdana for screen text.

I guess this will stack the odds in favour of traditional media in the film vs. digital debate, won't it?

OK. When it's ready you only have to find a city to conquer it.
