I am curious about your trip gear

I do not own any DSLR, Andy.
It seems that most votes so far have been for a set that includes the M9, M3, or SWC.
I have bought an EPSON V700 scanner to accomodate some MF scanning, and then I bought the SWC to use it. If my family trip is shorter than ten days, then I will keep things simple and then I will not use MF. If the stay lasts 14 days or so, then a MF would be suitable for what I want to do.

I would go about choosing a bit differently: start with the lenses you might want to use and then suit the bodies to the lens choice.
Is the family interested in taking photos as well--or will they bring their own cameras to use? I ask because that would influence my choice(s) some what as well.

Given the options you've listed, if it were me and my choice, I would take the M9 and SWC. Along with 35, 50, and 90 for the M9. If I were not going to take the MF camera, I'd add a 21mm lens.

Hi Rob,
My daughters each have a small digital camera, and my wife wants to enjoy traveling without photography. I do not have a 21mm lens that would work on the M9 due to protruding rear glass elements of the W-Rokkor 21/4 and the Canon 19/3.5. These lenses would work on a film M camera though. I have 28mm Rokkor that works fine on the M9.

I could use the 35/1.4 Summilux, the 50/2 Summicron and the 75/1.4 Summilux as a set. Maybe replace the heavy 75 Lux with the light Elmarit 90/2.8.

Hello Michael,
I need to practice using manual control with the M9. I always favor manual exposure control with film cameras anyways, and I have been lazy while using the M9 or M8. I set them to Auto exposure.

If you like the 75mm focal length, what about a Summarit-M 75mm f/2.5? I've been very tempted by that as I like the slightly shorter focal length.

I use an M-Rokkor 90/4 (aka Elmar-C 90/4) on the M9 with excellent results. It's tiny.
 
I will not buy another lens. I have too many lenses already. The 75/1.4 is one of Leica's best ever made lenses.
 
I didn't vote, I wouldn't take two cameras, just one with my favorite lens.
 
Surprise, surprise! My wife & I vacationed in Hawaii, took about 18 rolls of B&W film and didn't have any challenges.

I used an M4-2 with a 50mm Summarit (f2,5) lens.

It was our 35th Anniversary.

As for photography in Hawaii, shooting only in B&W is interesting. Many would have used color.

B&W with Leica, used Acros 100 and Pan F.

Color with Canon 5D Mark something in color, RAW capture.

In the U.S. Navy early 1970's. Spent a day at Pearl Harbor (on the way to Viet Nam). Missouri tour was interesting, crew of 3K. The ship I was on, (U.S.S. Badger DE-1071) crew of around 210!

i am traveling in a few weeks for almost a month to South Africa. To be with family, enjoy a vacation for all, at the South Coast-Indian Ocean.
i am traveling extremely light. Weight and bulk a serious problem for me.There is danger there, so my equipment based on that too.!
My Main Camera will be a Point and Shoot Digital, with 2 more for for back-up. They are all compact.Rechargeable AA cells, sufficient for the month,charger, card reader, portable drive. I will have plenty memory cards.
I am considering a film camera. The Cost of film and processing may be better used, in printing and creating small photo book.
Less is more.
 
Is a drive really needed when you have several memory cards? Is it for regular downloading and editing?

edited: I prefer not to take along something that heavy.
 
Digital equipment removes the worrying at each Xray check.
Maybe I should have thrown into the poll options also a micro 4/3 digital camera as a back-up for the M9?
 
- what do you want to photograph ? (night, vs. family portraits, vs. indoors or outdoors architecture, color vs. B+W, etc.)
- how much convenience do you need ? For example, do you have to carry other stuff (when walking around, going through x-rays, etc.)
- will you have a laptop ? (to shoot digital)
- how quickly you need/want the results when returning ?
- and finally: what do you want to learn, any plans on doing something new (photographically speaking) ?

These are typical questions that I ask myself before traveling and that help in gear choice ... Nobody else can answer these for you, except maybe your wife.

Maybe try something new, like one camera, one lens ?

I also go through this thought process before each long trip.
I was curious about how RFF members think about such choices.
The one camera one lens choice may become a two cameras two lenses choice.

Why would you consider taking two digital bodies (M8 + M9, for instance), but no way to backup your pictures ? How often did one of your Leicas break during your travels ?

During our recent Alaska trip, my wife lost several hundred photos via a defect and unrecoverable memory card. Trust me, you don't want to go through this (both of us took photos, I had the only keepers); backup your photos, either via a drive ("digital wallet" - they are much smaller than one of your Leicas), a tablet or a laptop, on a daily basis.

It happens. Statistically more frequently that film x-ray damage, or, I'm sure, more probable than your M9 breaking.
