I am off to meet with Professor Noam Chomsky!

Milton Friedman was the leading monetarist.

He was a professor of economics at the University of Chicago

who believed that value came from money

in contrast to those who believe that value comes from human beings,

that human beings and human laborers are the source of all value.

Milton Friedman believed it was money and gold.

Therefore, by changing monetary rates

and fiscal policy, he was able to organize an economy.

He was a free marketeer, a laissez-faire capitalist,

a laissez-faire theorist.

That's part of his monetarism.

Laissez-faire means let the market decide.

Devil take the hindmost. Get as much as you can and run.

This negates consumption, health and meeting human needs

while a few profit.

This is the theory of Milton Friedman.

My feeling is that there are two kinds of market fundamentalism.

When I use the term, is use it to mean

a deep faith in the power of the market,

and the market to solve economic problems,

and even other kinds of social and political problems.

I regard it as very naive in that sense.

It's almost a kind of religious faith: the market will solve it.

It's OK,

the market will solve it.

But they also sometimes think it's benevolent;

that the market will no only solve this, but that it will somehow

solve it in a way that benefits humanity.

To me, of course, it's completely unjustified.

The market doesn't give a damn how many people die.

The market may solve peak oil by killing 3 billion people.

There's nothing here to be worshiping.

It's type 1 market fundamentalism.

Type 2 have some kind of affection for the market

because they feel that it has,

for example, helped them into their positions of wealth and power.

@ Ranchu
The market is no more and no less than a place where people voluntarily exchange goods and services at a "fair" price. It has no divine power of guiding humanity, just like oil in the engine cannot decide which way the car will go, but it enables it to function.
The reality is complex, therefore the solutions to problems also need to be complex. Just like in photography, the answer to most fundamental social questions about what is the "right" solution is: "It depends". Social justice is very important, but the only place where everybody is equal is in the grave.

People have been equal in many places other than The Grave. They just keep getting killed and enslaved by fascists/capitalists for it.

"How did the liberal democracies respond? Exactly as you'd expect them to.

They despise democracy, for very good reasons: the masters do not want the ignorant meddlesome outsiders to run their own affairs, because they'll do it in their own interest.

You lose hierarchy, domination, and centralized control: all the values that the masters naturally want. "

-Noam Chomsky, talking about the US crushing the Greek anarchist resistance against the Nazis, after the war, funding and giving weapons to former fascists to wipe them out. Then installing the former (?) fascists as the ruling government.

@Ranchu
OK, I get the point, but you know, you are writing these words thanks to these fascists/capitalists who have granted you the freedom of speech. If you were born in prison, like me, your understanding of the world could probably be different.

Lol. I haven't granted fascists/capitalists the right to grant me jack.

😀

I'm sorry you were born in a prison.

🙁

Looking forward to your briefing.

The Russian Duma and even Iran have a larger opposition in Parlament than the US for example.

That is a complete [swear word]... Opposition in Duma is just a window dressing - they sing the same Putin song. The true opposition in Russia in marginalized - they even have no access to media anymore. I do not admire "US democracy" either, but comparing this to Russia is like using Polaroid instant camera to shoot the racing of Formula 1 car (trying to keep this somehow close to photography).

What Opposition is there in the US who has any legal right to a TV appearance none nada in fact in the final race to presidency only two candidates have the legal right to a TV appearance on Screen (usually one democrat and one republican).

The US has many small parties who have no rights to govern or play with the big Boys whatsoever the US is run by the democrats and the republicans weirdly enough it was the latter who were the good guys in the past this changed and now the roles are reversed. The US is a constitutional Republic and not a Democray. Thomas Jefferson was against Democracy and called it an elective Despotism. Therefore the US is no better than 97% of the countries worldwide. And the elector System is also one of the least democratic Systems possible . The US is an Oligarchy just like Russia and many other so called Democracies.

If you don't have a few millions lying around you shouldn't even try to run for a political Position in the US neither should you in Russia

The US media print and TV has very close ties to arm companies GE etc...
FOX News is more or less a republican Propaganda channel and the most widely watched News program in the US. The privately owned TV stations are owned by Oligarchs just like in Russia

It's the same in Russia Close to the State or some Oligarch and don't believe that even a single Oligarch (pro or against Putin, western or eastern) is a decent human being

Also stating PBS as a source is not really a good choice as it is a state owned Company and the US are currently in an undeclared state of war with Russia, Sanctions are according to international law an act of war.

And as I've said photography is the solution to world peace Obama and Putin should go on a Photo Outing and take McCain and Sauds with them. Instant world peace

Like I said - I am not a fan of the type of democracy "run by big corporate" that you described... still, freedom of word is hard to compare in US and Russia. I know little about PBS, but any documentaries about Putin (I have seen some from BBC and also of German origin) basically shows the same. And living close to Russia (Finland) and being fluent in Russian language and from time to time watching their TV programs I have all the reasons to be afraid of what is going on in that country.
Yes, they all should go and waist some film together (or even shoot digital), but we all know this will not happen...

The Queen might help she is an avid Rangefinder Leica shooter, if she was smart she might just have taught some of her grandchildren something useful like her love for Leica Ms 🙂

Raid - I missed this thread until now some way. It sounds like you had a fascinating meeting. I am also waiting to see your photos and even more, you thread on the meeting.

I had hardly any time for taking photos then, but I got two of him, and then, using my phone, his Assistant took two photos of us together.

Some people here got too excited about it all. This man has been around for many years, and he has said many things. Anyone can contact him about anything of concern. We all have opinions and views that may not be identical. This is fine. Life would be very boring if we alll gave in to one type of beliefs. When millions of people look up to this man, maybe he is saying things that millions believe in? It does not mean that "you" have to believe it too.

I forgot to ask him whether he likes to use RF cameras or not. I goofed ......
