I am 100% floored!
I posted here about my M8 getting a "drive blocked" and "shutter fault".
Tony at popflash gave me a person to speak with at Leica in NJ and he advised me sending it back for repair. I did so.
Today I got the estiamte back. They will fix it, full CLA, fix the CCD and apply a new warrentte all for FREE! Really FREE!
I called to make 100% sure I was reading it right but FREE is what they said.
Apparently it is under warranty...I am not the first owner nor the 2nd
I have not registered it with them either.
Either a mistake was made on their part or they are fixing it just cuz......
Wow...good news for once.

Glad to hear it. They are also fixing for free all Digilux II that develop a dead sensor (I understand they all will, eventually). I'm told they have also been replacing for free the circuit boards.

They did a rangefinder adjustment of my M7 for free, and I'm the second owner.

They must be making amends in their time of financial woes. I remember sending in an M6 and waiting 6 months for a return.

It's great to hear when companies treat their customers well. Here you will never hear when they don't!

Did they happen to mention an estimated turn around time?
They did..looks like mid to late August. The lady I spoke with said a part was needed that needed to come form Germany.
I will wait for a long timefor a FREE repair

Wow, unless they are sending you a loaner body then I'd say that is pretty unacceptable. 4 months without your camera is a long time, even for a FREE repair.

My M5s need red dots!
Glad to hear the news! I'm beginning to feel a little better now... Seems there is one more choice to have gear looked at besides Don and Sherry.

I just got an M7 back for repair of the dreaded 'ASA' flashing in the VF. Free as well and I'm the second owner. They've always done fantastic work, now it seems to be free as well!

Glad to hear it. Though I would be much happier if it hadn't involved Tony Rose. Don't get me wrong. I love Tony. He helped me tremendously with a problem I was having with Leica NJ.
It was amazing how smoothly things went after he got involved.
I just think excellent customer service should not require the intervention of one of the company's important distributors.

It has not in my experience.

Tony really was not involved; sorry if it came across that way. What Tony did was to give me a name and number direct for a customer service tech who could take the time to deal with my issue ASAP. Once we spoke of it I just sent the camera in. it did not go to anyone in particular at all...just went to repair. I doubt the tech I spoke with would remember me form a 3 minute conversation.
This was jsut sent in for regular repair.
I would love a loaner. Maybe a S2 and an M9
Honestly, I am very happy it will be fixed for free. Had I bought new under warr. I would ask for a loner but in this situation I am happy.

They are slow, IMHO, but they do great work and they do extra stuff for free. Kudos.

They are slow. But I found when the sensor went bad on my (well now it's someone else's) Digilux 2, OUT OF WARRANTY, they fixed it at no charge. If Leica knows of a defect, they tend to make good even out of warranty. But, slow, slow, slow....

with so many stories of M8 shutter issues and the costs to have them fixed I was ready for a large expense.

The free fix is not the deal maker for me. I shoot professionally, and although most of my work is DSLR work, I do continue to use the M bodies for certain types of work. If a body breaks I need it back soon. Leica doesn't have pro service. DAG has been able to offer quick turnaround to me in the past, but less so recently. Why should a Leica N.J. repair take 4 months. How long does it takes to get a part from Germany? Leica lost the professional market, first film and now digital.

Good for them. Maybe Leica are getting some customer focus at long last.

Glad fix was free but!!!
Glad fix was free but!!!
This is why having a second or even third body is essential if you use this camera all the time or use it profesionally. I am looking for a second M8 for this reason (long wait repair time) and when I get the M9 I will do the same thing. I believe a minimum of 2 cameras, 3 if you want to sleep better at night!
