I am shocked with Leica NJ :)

I think I should contact them instead, I emailed Solms twice already with the last one two weeks ago, and I haven't heard from them...:(

That's why they call it a warranty and not medical insurance. When something goes wrong, you fix it under warranty.

The free fix is not the deal maker for me. I shoot professionally, and although most of my work is DSLR work, I do continue to use the M bodies for certain types of work. If a body breaks I need it back soon. Leica doesn't have pro service. DAG has been able to offer quick turnaround to me in the past, but less so recently. Why should a Leica N.J. repair take 4 months. How long does it takes to get a part from Germany? Leica lost the professional market, first film and now digital.
The problem is that it is an M8 - if a part runs out it has to be made - and all resources, limited as they are, are obviously turned towards the M9 right now. Turnaround on 95% of M9 repairs in Soms currently is 5 working days or less - not a bad record. No wonder a large percentage of posters on LUF are professionals nowadays.

This is why having a second or even third body is essential if you use this camera all the time or use it profesionally. I am looking for a second M8 for this reason (long wait repair time) and when I get the M9 I will do the same thing. I believe a minimum of 2 cameras, 3 if you want to sleep better at night!

I agree but Iam not a professional...hell I cant even take good picturs :)

If my living depended on it I would have more than one digital M body and i would have an excuse to have more than one digital M body.

I have plenty of film bodies to keep me busy.

Both my M7's developed problems with the mechanical ASA reader at the same time this winter.
I sent them to Leica NJ which forwarded them to Solm's for upgrade to the optical reader. No charge for either as one was under warrenty(Extended Passport) and one wasn't (purchased second hand, never used from a Long Island Times phtographer). At the same time I decided to have the viewfinder mod done to each camera as these are 0.85 finders. The camera under warrenty was no charge but I had to pay for the other($365USD).
While at Solm's, the tech decided to recover one of the cameras because the covering was not quite flush, something that never bothered me but no charge. Both cameras were cleaned and adjusted, no charge.
Time was about 2 months.
I have an M6 and M3 and did not schedule any events during this period that the M6 or my Nikon's could not accomplish. So not really a problem.
Both cameras are essentially new and ready for a few more years of work.

I've had good service from Leica NJ too, all warranty work.

Glad to hear the news! I'm beginning to feel a little better now... Seems there is one more choice to have gear looked at besides Don and Sherry. ;)
There are plenty others besides Don and Sherry. I've never used Sherry but Don has done terrific work for me. However poor turnover and lack of communication are now a problem, despite the undoubted quality of his work. I now send my repairs to Steve Choi who I strongly recommend; reliable estimates, excellent work, good communication, 1-3 weeks turnover.

It just gets better and better....

The repair was scheduled for return to me end of August. That was a looong time to wait but I figured free is fine :)

Today I got a mystery box from Leica NJ :)

My M8 is back home, fixed, cleaned, snappy and ready to go about 60 days early! I even checked the original paperwork to confirm the estimated ship date...

I have no idea why this was done for free or why I got my baby back 2 months early but kudos to Leica NJ for helping me out. It feels very good to have the M8 back in bag!

They must be making amends in their time of financial woes. I remember sending in an M6 and waiting 6 months for a return.

I remember them holding my camera for a month because they needed a description of what I wanted done with my camera. Eventually, when I found a human being who would answer the phone, I told them to open the box. There they found the letter with the description. Which they would have found had they opened the box before sending me their letter that they needed a letter from me.

So, glad to hear they're in a period of atonement.

Great news! There's nothing better than a perfectly working M8. Even better than the M9 in so many ways.
