I bought one of those R-D1s that's been for sale lately.

I love it so far. Leica0Series sold me this beauty of a camera with only a few light wear spots. So I have done a bit of shooting with it and here are my thoughts / observations.

The layout of the camera is superb. being able to have the screen flipped around and put away makes it seem so much like shooting film. I find the noise of the shutter not to bad.

I shot with it the night I got it at a quiet bar near my place at iso 1600. I have to say I am rather impressed with the sensor. I did notice quite a bit of hot pixels. It has the newer firmware and using the hot pixel remover did alright. I was pleasantly surprised however when I used CS2 to process the images the hot pixels were non existent! Is there an explanation for this anyone knows?

The first shot was at 1/3 and the second was at 1/17 both at f2 with a Summicron 35mm.

I brought the camera out the next day and had someone stop and talk to me about my "vintage" camera. He was surprised when i flipped the screen around to show him the shots I was taking.

So far i am really liking this camera, and like many posts i have seen on here, I wish another version of this camera existed with these ergonomics and a newer more up to date sensor. But alas, i will just have to enjoy my new tool.

All taken with Zeiss 21mm f4.5 ZM. Last one taken out a moving cab window (hence the vignetting).

I think alot of the Hot Pixel problems people experience with cameras is simply the result of preview processing not handling the data properly (well not improper just that they need to be quick previews so some data gets goofy during it)...hence in photoshop they disappear.

Glad you're enjoying it! I miss it already, although I love the 35 Summilux I bought. Also got a Digilux 2 to give me something digital, but it's not the same.

These are very great photos. You have already make me want to buy one... :-(

I suspect the pixel are either as TFab said, wrong data processing, or actually a hot pixel in the LCD screen.

nevin: I didn't see hot pixels on the screen on the camera, it was when I was converting the images in Capture One.

Another new R-D1 owner here.

Are you converting your ERF files to DNG? With Adobe's DNG converter, I go from a 10mb ERF with a tiny embedded preview to a 6mb DNG with a full-sized embedded JPEG to boot.
