I bought a M8 to make use of all my Leica years and gear. And like every Photo-ego I may want a M8 back up. Question, is there some way to control files so as not to have files with same numbers. This can be a problem with two camera and file numbers over lapping on a computer.

It happened with Nikon. The computer asked,

"... Do You Wish to Replace DCS##### ? "
and I did, and it did. One Nikon, #2 caught up to Nikon, #1 and images got lost on the computer. All files were burn to disk before loaded into the computer. But it was a lot of hunting for images I knew I had. I now have two very different Nikon file names, LD1#### and LD2#### Works for me.

Can I do the same with the M8 for file numbers ? I have not found any good info on the file naming and I have been all over the 'Net'
Thanks for your time.

Keep shooting and have fun doing it.

The easiest is probably to rename the files on import. If you need to know which camera is used, I believe there is a serial number in the EXIF data.

On the Mac, use a small program called BatchFileRename.

Lets you add prefixes, suffixes, lets you strip a number of characters from beginning or end of file names etc.

First add a prefix to the filenames, then import them from the card to the computer.

I'm pretty sure something similar will exist for Windows too, right?

For total safety, I'd go with a color code on each camera and matching color codes on different cards. That way you can reduce any risk on mixing things up most.

Good luck.

Simple, there are a few options:

!.Reset the numbering on one camera.
Basically, format a card in the camera; take an image ; insert in a card reader ; in the computer change the image number from for instance L102341 to L200001
Reinsert in the camera ; take another image. From now on all image numbers in that camera will start with L2xxxxx.
Afterwards don’t mix up the cards you use in each camera, as inserting a wrong image number will reset the sequence again.

2.I am no expert in Lightroom, but I think you can filter images on camera serial number in the Library and save them as a Collection.

3.You can change the the standard card name.

4.Use a handy little program called ImageIngester.
