Somebody at the shop made a goof... put my slide film in the c-41 machine. It was a test roll really, I was taking the Exa out to try out two lenses I hadn't used before: A Schneider Curtagon 2.8/35, and a Steinheil Cassarit 3.5/100. The lighting couldn't have been nicer, but unfortunately all of that wonderful subtlety was obliterated by the processing.

I tried converting some to B&W. Rather interesting results, although I'm not really sure what to think. Maybe this look would work with the right subject though.

One thing's for sure though, both of these lenses are definitely keepers. The weight of that brass-barreled Schneider is especially good at combating the Exa's brutal mirror slap. On the other hand the Exa revealed it has trouble with the 1/150 shutter speed, that's what's causing the black band across the top of some of the images. Guess it's time for so new oil and grease.

Interesting shots anyway. Without your explanation I would just have assumed you PS'd those photos for aesthetic reasons.

Did you have some encouraging words for the tech and shop? 😀

Did you mention to the lab that you were to process this using E6?

Whenever someone brings us slide films, we always have to ask if they want to cross-process them or have them developed in E6...

Unless the person wasn't concentrating, as I'm sure you made it clear to him what you wanted. Fish kite photos look nice though!

yeah, Fish kite photos are definitely interesting. I kinda like the look of it.Kinda dreamy-otherworldly look actually.

I like them. What's with the heavy shadow at the top of some of the pics? I'd be more concerned about that.

I was perfectly polite with the shop keepers, the person who picked up my order wasn't there so it wouldn't serve any point to direct my displeasure at people who weren't responsible. They offered me store credit which I immediately used on new film.

This particular shop is the only one in town that does E6 (in fact the other shop that "does" E6 sends it to them) and I have been dropping off slide film there for four or five years now. The person who took my film this time was somebody I hadn't seen there before, so must be new. They probably just assumed it was C-41 without looking at it.

I know cross-processing used to be the thing back when the Lomo-LCA reached peak popularity about six or seven years go. But back then there were a lot of different slide films that reacted well to cross-processing. Precisa and its Fuji relatives don't, all giving a green cast. But I guess I at least know what happens now. I feel like most of the roll was ruined, except for the series of shots with the carp streamer, where the extra grain and moodiness of the sky really added something.

Huss, the black band on the top is the result of a slight stickiness in the Exa's vertically traveling shutter. The shutter sectors don't quite separate before starting their travel, causing a vignetting situation, probably exaggerated by my use of the 100mm lens. This is a pretty common fault on Exas when using the top shutter speed (narrowest shutter slit).
