I just recently dropped a Nikon d700, encased in a "padded bag" ( the bag manufacturer is KATA.) The camera will not make an exposure (shutter won't operate.) When I press the shutter release, I hear a "wshhhh," and the letters "ERR" appear in the information panel which usually displays shutter speed and aperture....

(Help needed!)

Well you can handle this one of two way
1 Wait for a bunch of responses to this thread and then send the camera to Nikon or an authorized repair facility for a quote and repair
2 Send the camera to camera to Nikon or an authorized repair facility for a quote and repair.

Have you tried another lens on the camera...one not in the bag when it was dropped...???
Have you mounting the lens on another camera...???
Just throwing out an idea to try...

And of course leave the battery out for an extended time (a few hours), after that send it to Nikon ;-)

'Bout padded bags: I often find that the padding is excessive with a lot of makers. It is intended to give you a (false) sense of security. The camera still get thrown around inside the bag and can get broken, as in your case.

Sorry for your bad luck. It's strange how some drops that seem terrible have no effect and others that seem trivial cause problems.
