Finally, after many years of lusting after a Rollei SL66 I finally found one with the 80MM Zeiss Planar lens. I clearly overpaid for it, not excessively, but more than I'd planned for. These cameras are not all that common, and people who have good ones tend to hold onto them. A friend who owns one, said that I should spend some time reviewing the manual before trying to make pictures. In my case, trying is the operative word! :D

Now it's time to wait for it to arrive. I guess I could have put this in FrankS's "waiting for the mail" thread, but since it's not a rangefinder, I felt it probably belonged here.

It's an old model, but the tilt lens capability coupled with the lens reversal for macro work is intriguing. Is anyone currently using this camera. What's your experience been with it.

I may be putting my 330F in the classifieds if I like the Rollei.

Respectfully,

Jeff

Heck, it's a new tool, more room to grow, things to learn, stuff to kick...

In short, makes you happy. Congratulations! :)

Jeff, that is a very interesting camera. One that still piques my interest, but then, I'm done. ;)

The question becomes, of course, do I need to get rid of the Mamiya 330F which I rarely use? It's a great camera, but I rarely use it, and would rather see it land with someone who will use it.

Frank:

I have recently begun playing with Beutler developer based on recommendations from my friend with the SL66. His images are crisp and sharp with breathtaking tonality. You know, the kind of stuff, Todd Hanz and a few others on the forum routinely put out. Todd uses Pyro and a few others here do as well. But in any case...

It's good that you're done!

I was done for about a year before this opportunity emerged. Even though it's an evil SLR, it's certainly a unique one. It wasn't GAS in my case, this was a reasoned purchase. Just have to make sure the wife doesn't see it for awhile. :bang:

Very cool. I've never had one but they look VERY COOL!

Please share some shots of and with her!

Bill:

I definitely will as soon as it arrives. Notice my careful use of the impersonal pronoun. Don't want to be accused of feminizing my new camera. Heavens, the freudians out there would have a field day! ;)

Colyn:

Stay away from that damn site!!! It's what pushed me over the edge! :bang:

That explains the sudden unexplainable urge to get a SL66.

Just had to take out all of my Leicas and play with then to make the urge go away....:D

Leica density...

Colyn:

That's got to be it. Leica density! I only have one Leica! That's the problem.

If I had at least two then I wouldn't be so tempted. :D

Nah! I've wanted this camera for almost 20 years. Given where I am in the life cycle, I figured now or never! :)

Great camera. I got one recently for a good price (still the most expensive camera I’ve bought though...) because it needed some tinkering to get it working properly.

I’ve criminally only put a single test roll through it since repairing it, but must find time to put it to more use soon. You can’t beat the ease of doing medium format macro stuff with the SL66. You’ll have lots of fun!

I love the contrast and tonality on the moth. What lens did you use?

That was the standard 80 Planar - one of older pre-HFT ones - I believe I had it reversed for both those shots. I don't think I'll be able to afford any other lenses in a hurry, though I'd especially love a wide.

My camera has the same lens. I'm a wide angle person, and will probably look to sell my Mamiya 330F TLR which is mint to fund a 50mm Distagon for the new camera. I will not sell my Mamiya 6 with it's 50. If I did, I'd have to leave RFF. ;)

Plus, granted that I'm a less than competent photographer, my best efforts have always been with the Mamiya 6 which I've had since the 80's. I really have no connection to the TLR. It belonged to a trapshooting friend who bought it after retiring from Philadelphia Electric as a forensic photographer. It was to be his retirement camera. Unfortunately, he developed macular degeneration and traded it to me for an old model 12. It deserves a home with someone who will use it.

I used one in the studio many years ago. The bellows draw and reversing lens features were useful and the lenses too sharp for dreamy portraiture. I think you'll enjoy it and the 330f will need a new home.

The SL66 is huge but so is the 330. The Hasselblad is comparable to a Rolleiflex in size. The SLR's are oriented horizontally, while the TLRs are oriented vertically. The SL66 is a very cool camera though.

That works for me. I'm not a professional, and more interested in pursuing and continuing some current landscape and architecture projects.

I like crisp, sharp monochromes, and am still searching for the ideal film developer combo. I've been a Tri-X guy for a very long time, and have recently tried Neopan 400 and Foma 200 based on commentary from this forum.

I'm currently awaiting the delivery of some DiXactol Ultra. My buddy has been using it with Delta 100 and TMAX 100 for awhile and is producing the kind of monochrome images I've been striving to produce with little success on my part. Most of it is attributeable to my general lack of photographic talent, but hey, I love making pictures, even bad ones!

I'm very interested in the lens tilt capability in the camera, particularly with respect to one of my current architecture projects. I'm not worried about size, I spent five years lugging a 4 X 5 around before settling on medium format.
