I got a 7 !

I am so excited. I just got a 7.

There are some bright spots on the bottom. There are also bright spots on the back where my glasses wold rub. Other than that the finish is perfect. One curtain has a small wrinkle.

The VF and RF brighter than the M3s I have played with. The meter is active, I have not checked the accuracy.

This will be a perfect companion to my IV S2.

Now I need to run a roll of film.

I do love a good Canon 7. One of the all time great cameras.

I put a little "rubber footie" on the back of the hi/lo switch to protect my glasses. it works quite well. One of those little circular stick on pieces of rubber, like what is on the bottom of Laptops and Keyboards.

I wish I could afford it. I just spent my camera money on the 7. It was about the same price as your "P". If it is still available when I get the cash together, I'll grab it.

From the one roll I ran thru the camera with the 0.95 I was impressed! Much easier and nicer to work with than my FED2 with the 0.95. Also has the parallax correction!

I just wonder about critical focusing wide open. With the FED2 I could focus on a 1mm wide item(using a tripod, not handheld). I ran extensive tests after I changed over the FED2.

I ran a couple of test rolls. The shutter is capping.

The camera needs a CLA. It is going to cost $98. Is that a good price? That is also what my repairman charges for my SLRs (except Canon F1Ns for $115).

It is not too bad. The seller will pay $66 and I will pay $32.

It includes cleaning the viewfinder and adjusting the shutter too!

Once you get the CLA, you'll have a keeper. I have a 7.....it's the only "very desireable" camera I have. I usually collect inexpensive cameras. The 7 is soo much better than everything else I have. I can't even begin to imagine a high end rangefinder!!

Congratulations! Get the CLA out of the way and you'll have one of the really great cameras; I know I love using mine. If you get the urge to splurge after you get it back, consider a Luigi case for it. It's a really fine accompaniment to the 7.

Zvi at Superior Camera has been doing my repairs and CLAs on my SLR equipment for years (10+). He has worked on my F1Ns, L lenses, and my T90. When I brought in my FTb on its 30th birthday after thousands of shots, he checked the meter and the shutter speeds and said all were within factory specs and gave the camera back no charge! His work has ALWAYS been excellent. The used cameras I have purchased form him have been perfect!

I know someone who had is QL17 GIII CLAed there. He was happy.

My question is why is the charge the same for SLRs as RFs? I've never tinkered with an SLR, so I don't know the difficulties. SLR's mirror, prism, focus screen, and eyepiece alignment has seemed much more difficult to me than an RF's. SLRs also have the auto-lens charge and mirror mechanism too! So when he charges the same for my old mechanical F1 ($98) as a Canon 7 RF, I thought it a bit high! You think it is low. I've never comparison shopped for service. I was referred to Superior and always stayed there.

I'm paying almost twice that for a Canon 7 overhaul at Essex. ( they finished in less than the quoted two weeks, but I can't pick it up untill thurs) Even then, I think it's in line with specialized repair charges for just about anything. Granted, many CLA's probably just take an hour or so because not much is really done, many will take a few hours. Whats silly is that people pay twice as much for a Leica bottom loader repair as they do for any kind of SLR. Your average Retina or OM-2 is far more complicated yet cheaper to overhaul than just having a Leica looked at--at the same shop! I think you definitely have a good thing with that repair guy. You could probably make money as a middleman for a percentage for the rest of us and our repairs.

The Canon 7 IS a high end rangefinder. It is the top-of-the-line for Canon in terms of features. The 7s replaced the Selenium meter with CDS, and put the accessory shoe back onto it. The finder is as good as a Nikon SP. The M3 and other Leica's are quieter and have a well-defined RF patch, ie sharp edges. On the Canon, You will not get shutter burn-through, and of course can use a super-speed lens that costs about 1/5th of a comparable lens for the Leica or Nikon.

I have never had a focus accuracy issue with a well-calibrated Canon 7. The 50/0.95 bought separately from a well-maintained Canon 7 was spot-on wide-open and close-up.

I got the camera back Friday morning from the CLA.

Three days earlier than promised. Wow! what a pleasure to use! It is as smooth and as easy to use as M3s I've played with. The back also opens! It is so easy to focus. I've run a couple of test rolls already and everything checks out fine.

As for the bad things, the meter is accurate, but only goes to 400ASA. The RF patch's edges are not quite as sharp as the M3.

This camera fits so well in my hands, so ergonomic (thinness of the body, thumb wind, wind standoff, shutter button placement), so easy to use, that it is to other RFs what Canon F1Ns are to other SLRs.

I'm soooo happy!
