The Contax is now without a take-up spool. I don't know whether it had one from the start or it vanished after the repair.
What do I do to get a take-up spool?

It works just fine - but don't let your daughters play with the hacksaw when you finish to make it with the fine grit sandpaper...
f2eyelevel:
Thanks for the Mike Elek's link, but I don't even have a hacksaw or sandpaper.
Maybe the repairman has a few extra ones?

you can also tape the film leader to a take up spool from an empty cassette till you get a real TU spool.

If it doesn't turn up in your house or none of the DIY remedies works, I can sell you 1 from my stash of post-WWII ZI Contax/Contarex spools.

I tried out taping the film leader to a regular take-up spool. It worked like a charm. Still, when away from home, I will not have a tape handy.

Sorry Raid I must remember to read the entire thread before jumping in. Alex Photo has them for $7 - he's a good eBay dealer and the Kiev one is in many ways better than the Contax design.raid said:Michael,

Thanks, Michael.
I first am trying the repairman. He may have some in stock.
Next, I will contact Alex Photo.

Raid if you are into making a take up spool yourself, try the above link.
Good luck - I am jealous of your $150 IIIa!!

Hi hugivza,
The repairman for the Contax will give me a take-up spool. Thanks for the link. In the first test roll, I just taped the film end to a standard take-up spool. It worked.
If you think about it, since a full CLA includes taking a camera apart and fixing it, you might as well start with a broken camera to "earn" such a CLA.

Or you can simply use a regular film spool and tape the film leader to it. I did that when I forgot to bring a film spool to Beijing.
They didn't have a Contax spool, but they had some tape.

This double slotted spool is the best I have had in any camera of whatever type. Once you insert the film tongue through both slots, film will never free itself from the spool. And very easy to dislodge film too.
Cheers,

Even the H103 produces results with as good microcontrast as a post WWII Sonner, try Kodachrome 64 & tripod and f/5.6 you will be amazed.

Noel,
I was very pleased with the results from my Menopta (which is a H103). It seems to be an excellent lens overall.

The camera repairman sent me a take up spool that is very easy to use for loading up film.

Mike,
This is exactly what I have done with the first roll of film so far.
