I got my first hate mail!

[QUOTEIt's best not to respond to them.][/QUOTE]

They do recommend not feeding the trolls, don't they?

On the other hand, it is amusing when someone takes on a troll with gentle humour. Does causing an apoplectic heart attack equate to manslaughter?

Interesting -- the only manifestation of troll-like behavior I've experienced has come from one of the moderators here....

People who feel bad, always seems to like making others feel worse then they are. Who else can they look down upon after gazing at their sorry selves in the mirror?

It's still bloody unpleasant when it happens though. Commiserations. The advice to ignore him is the only possible option. Well, and delete the garbage. Frances's theory "People mostly do it because they're envious."

Cheers,

R.

I would not spend one single moment thinking about this small-minded idiot any more. It would be a complete waste of your energy. There is some reason that he took the time to write, as opposed to ignoring your work, and I suspect at least a part of it is because he sees something in your work that he likes.

Look at it this way -- this person did it purposely to get a reaction out of you. He succeeded. Much as it's hard to do so, the best thing to do is simply ignore him.

just remember the words Shakespeare put in Hamlet's mouth about detractors: " small dogs nipping at a great man's heels."

Think of your critics as small dogs.

Block mail from sender, delete, empty trash.
Don't waste your time on the poor sod.
Get out and take some pictures.

It might not even be a real person... could be am email bot.

But if it is a real person, then congratulations! Remember - the opposite of love is NOT hate, it is apathy.

Photography, like any creative field is very subjective. I frequently use music as a comparison because it just makes sense, The backstreet boys and the beastie boys are both musical artists, both very successful and both have very devoted fans. But they have entirely different audiences and styles. And it's very much the same for photography.

I agree. Another thing I think of is that some people are casual fans and others are fanatical. Casual fans may not care about all of the intricate details or even understand why they like / don't like something.

You're right - he did get a reaction out of me. Maybe the one he wanted, maybe not.

Perhaps I didn't express this so well in my first post, but his comment hasn't perturbed me in the slightest. Rather, it excites me. But even with this post I'm feeding the trolls so this is the last I'll speak of them.

I don't normally get much activity on my blog, which suits me just fine. But today I got a comment - and hate mail at that!

It came from someone who uses an IP address from New York City, and used an anonymous (@mailinator.com) email address to register for the Wordpress comments system.

Internet anonymity is magical. This is the first time that someone's ever directly said to me that they dislike my work, although I'm sure/certain it's not the first time someone's thought that sentiment. I'm curious to know who this person is - and why they took the time to leave me a comment.

Do you ever get hate mail? What's your favorite piece that you've received?

Not on English speaking WEB.

I just checked your blog, interesting street pictures.
So, ignore/block the troll.
