I got scammed on eBay with a Noctilux auction

Ebay is a marketplace transferred to the internet. Just how revolutionary that is really depends on your interpretation of that.

Positioning itself as only providing the space in which others buy and sell is the rationale eBay uses to avoid responsibility for the scammers it hosts.

In any case, I agree that sending large sums of money to purchase unseen merchandise from complete strangers is, by nature, a risky business. I've never sought anything that I couldn't buy more securely somewhere other than eBay.
 
My 2 cents worth, i`m am really sorry for all those that have been scammed, ripped off, fleeced on E-bay.
I am really sorry for all those that have been scammed, ripped off, fleeced by investment advisors.
I am really sorry for all those who have been scammed,ripped off, fleeced by accountants - lawyers - bankers- real estate sales sharks.
I am really sorry for all those who have sent money to Nigeria - seriously some still do!!!
But i am most sorry for those that still do not realise that in this day and age they have at LEAST a 50 % part to play in any financial transaction, it is the individuals responsibility to research , research,and check, then weigh up the pros and cons.
e-bay is just there, it is just a business and like any business we all have a choice whether to use it or not.
Choose carefully/spend wisely
 
Does ebay still get their cut from a bad sell like this or do they just drop it all togehter? How does that work? If they get their cut, where did they get it from? If they didn't, why are they not going after them like the poor soul who got taken?

Epimetheus, it is very sad to hear stories like that. In developed countries people get used to trust each other and some sh*tholes use it their advantage... I know it bothers you right now, but do not worry too much. Nature will find the way for justice. Just do what you have to do to get your money back, but do not put too much stress into this - not worth it! And wait for something good to happen to you soon! Good luck, and keep your nose up next time!!!
 
I've done a bit of buying and selling on Ebay over the years, and have learned a few things along the way. First, I always use paypal or a credit card, no matter how insignificant the cost. Second, I always do a detailed feedback search.

When selling, I am careful as well. I use actual photos of the item I am selling, along with a card in the picture with my Ebay user-name, and the date of the picture. Not only does this give more proof to the actual buyer that I really have the item I am selling, it also makes it difficult for someone else to steal the photo to use on a fraudulent listing.

This happened a few years ago after I sold a Kirby Morgan dive helmet (these are expensive). One week after I sold the helmet, I got an email from a former bidder saying that my helmet was for sale on Ebay again. Sure enough, someone had used the photos from my sale, and even my seller's description to create a fraudulent listing.

It's too late for the OP to do much now, but the rest of us can learn a lesson from his mishap. Use a credit card or paypal, and use due diligence when any shopping at internet auction sites.

yep, and i suspect so few do, i think many are entranced by the magic 99.7% Feedback, it means nothing if you do not check detailed feedback

I'm not ready to give up on that although I can't afford to buy anything in a long time. All stuff in Finland is very expensive and I have saved a lot of money buying from eBay, RFF, FredMiranda and other places.

Car scams on Craigslist are rampant I can tell you that for sure. I know, I helped a friend sell his $20,000
USD Mercedes there. We had scammers coming at us from left and right - it was amusing!
 
Swedbank probably has his real name and address. eBay certainly has his IP address. So it should be possible to trace the guy if I can get the authorities to do so.

ebay gets their cut unless you talk to them. This is what I did when some dude ripped me off on RFF. In my case paypal kicked back a fair amount to soften the landing. It was very decent of them. I should have seen greed when it approached, but I dont travel in those circles.

You forgot to mention Sears. They will rip you off big time if you're not careful - just ask me (they are not what they used to be I'm afraid). I think something's wrong with the whole country at some fundamental level. I personally think it's a consequence of the increasing secularization of modern life leading to a decline in ethical conduct.

I had scammers and their cousins coming out the woodwork when I sold my Noctilux. The lies were simply amazing. One guy asked me to mail the Noct to a company in the city next door -- I thought that was weird given the close proximity. I suggested person-to-person for the $4000 trade. Long story short: Turns out the "local guy" was actually in Saudi Arabia and the paypal would have been from overseas. Of course he would have told paypal he didnt receive the item for a full refund or he would have cancelled the credit card payment.

Very sad to read that!
I once got scammed with a 1000 Euro equivalent on Ebay Canada. Even when the case was reported with Canadian white collar authorities,- that guy had also cheated on some Canadian buyers,- there was no way for me do deal with the affair from here in Germany, I would have had to have a lawyer in Canada. So I let it go.
I know how you feel with twice the amount.

I think that's true, sadly; the demise of encoded morality, and the rise of a certain sort of rip-off capitalism.

I think we Anglo-saxons have it worst; we exported it to you, then re-imported the US version. I see it as connected to the passing of craftsmanship; now the convention is that anyone who does a decent day's work actually making things is a mug. When I travel to America and see people who manufacture clothing, or guitars, or of course cars, they're all a bit beaten down and defeated. It's sad.
