The ones that came with my Fuji X10 were supplied with a plastic tool for spreading the ring. It worked fairly well.

It's such a simple tool but I use it loads!

I prefer the triangular ones. I just use a blunt butter knife to open them up if my fingernails can't manage it.

I use a camera strap on almost all of my cameras. The only one that I don't is the Kiev 88 and I am working on that.

I worry too much about dropping my cameras and a good neck strap or wrist loop reduces that chance.

The Contax G came with a much nicer version of that ring opener tool. I have a couple of those kicking around.
