I have been asked to shoot a parade

Thinking of bringing 2 bodies one with 25mm and the other with 40mm. I think the wide angle would really actuate the characters plus the 40 could still capture a lot without getting crazy. Any thoughts?

Are you shooting from a press area or from the crowd? If you're on the ground, it can be difficult to get close to the action, which might limit the usefulness of a wide lens. Living in New Orleans, I find a 28mm or 35mm is good for smaller events like second lines or Mardi Gras Indians. For an actual parade I usually take a 50mm or 85mm. A lot depends on the size and nature of the parade. If this is the sort of parade where they throw beads and things, make sure you have a solid metal lens hood.

no beads, just a kids parade for a school. I will be on the ground. After the last post, I am thinking 40mm and a 90

This is one of those instances where less isn't more. What happens if when you get there, you realize that the perfect focal length lens has been left at home? I'm not saying to bring every lens you have, jsut a good range so you can handle whatever the situation calls for.

Use a wide or extra wide. Get close. Move with the parade. Start moving with the front of the parade and slowly drift to the back.

Bring and shoot a lot of film. Remember that the second shot after a person knows they are being photographed is frequently the best.

Most importantly, shoot to please yourself not what you think someone else will want. Otherwise you will end up with boring photos just like all the kid's moms and pops out there.
