After much thinking and waiting I decided to go for it, Just ordered my RD-1!
At £1990 including the 40mm nokton classic and free delivery, could not find a better deal not even on ebay.

It is a lot of money fom me and I really hope it will be woth the price.

Any advice on very good value lenses that behave well with the RD-1?

I won't be able to afford expensive (read Leica) M mount lenses at least for a while.

Cheers All

Well, now you have time to take that 40mm for a spin and dabble in the cheap Russian lenses available. :)

Good luck on your buy, and enjoy!

Congratulations! Mine just came in this last Friday and I'm loving it! I bought a Summacron 50 f2 and a Summaron 35 f3.5 on the used market. Both are in immaculate condition and picked up both for under $700. I have no regrets with the camera. If I had one nitpick it would be that the PS RAW plug-in on the Mac is a little slow and has no batch capabilities. I personally prefer it over ACR though.

Francesco,

eBay seems to be as good a resource as any for Russian lenses, just be sure to employ a little patience and only buy lenses that are clearly in excellent condition, i.e. steer away from eBay deals that present blurred or underexposed photos of the lenses.

There are also some good deals on Voigtlander lenses on eBay for not much more than the Russian offerings. Once again, be patient, be prudent.

If you chance upon some of the older Canon M-mount lenses, which go for around 200 GBP, just be aware that these produce images with a good level of detail but provide a comparitively lower contrast level when compared to the Leica and Voigtlander range, resulting in an effect that is similar to the use of a soft filter.

p.s. You are right about the expenses, but if you already have any kind of rangefinder experience, then you shouldn't be disappointed with the Epson R-D1. If it is your first rangefinder and you find the initial experience disconcerting enough to decide it is not for you, then just be sure to allow at least 500 or 1000 exposures before discounting all rangefinder users as clinically certifiable. :bang:

The R-D1 was my first leap into the range finder world, and I became hooked. More surprisingly, my wife loves it. She knew nothing about cameras before, but now prefers the R-D1 and my leica over an old DSLR. The DSLR used to intimidate her, with all of the displays, numbers everywhere, etc. The RF is a simple camera and easy to grasp.

As soon as I showed her the effect of changing the aperture and its relationship with depth of field, everything clicked. She now understands the connection between aperture and shutter speed and compensates accordingly. Its even helping her see the value in a new summilux ;)

fgianni- hi, I bought the R-D1 with the 40/1.4 Nokton and the 28/1.9 Ultron (an excellent budget lens).

I got a very nice Jupiter-8 50/2 in black for less than £30 off the net (not ebay, just looking under classic cameras in Google) and a few other nice cheap lenses. I've only ever used ebay once - for a cheap digital p/s camera, and I didn't much like the experience, although the camera was fine. It just made me too anxious about returning it if it didn't work.

Other lenses worth checking out (see other threads here for more details) are the 21/4, the 35/1.7 and the 50/1.5 - all from Voigtander. I'm sure others here will have different favourites, but these lenses seem to get consistent good reviews.

cheers, and all the best with the camera!
Phil

ps I have since sold the 40mm Nokton, as I prefer the 35mm focal length. My line-up now (final, for the foreseeable future) is:
21/2.8 Leica Elmarit
28/1.9 Ultron
35/1.7 Ultron
50/2 Konica Hexanon

and the Jupiter-8 and an old Summar for fun ;)
