GaryLH: Bingo for your suggestion: hold the OK button down for 5 seconds or so. WORKED! It not only eliminated the macro mode but switched the VF back from EVF to OVF. So it might have been stuck in EVF since I first fiddled with the camera .
Today, photographing a large gathering in a large house I had no trouble at all and with the new look in the VF I was able to focus and shoot much faster. Further, when we went outside into the glaring sunlight no darkening of the VF occurred regardless of whether I wore my glasses or not.
dct: I have a new X100s so you might well be right on menu changes.
