I inherited a M42 Super Multi coated Takumar 50mm 1.4 Now what for a body?

The lens has the stop down pin and the auto/manual metering switch. I don't have a M42 screw mount body . any thoughts as to which of the Pentax models to use the capabilities of this lens? It would be nice to have capability to use the auto metering.

I enjoy using a Chinon Memotron CE3 for auto metering and it even does aperture priority exposure. Otherwise it is a Spotmatic SPII or any of the other spotties.

I bought an URTH adapter M42/F mount. It has the glass which theoretically allows for full infinity. However, when screwed on it binds the focus ring by a constriction in the moving lens and cannot fully turn to short distances.

The SMC Takumar on a later body will have metering with the aperture wide-open.

A Spotmatic F matches this lens. I recently picked one up with the same lens. Works well.

Both Fuji (Fujica ST 701) and Olympus (Olympus FTL) made screw mount cameras.

I hadn't thought of that. I have an MX and maybe even an adapter that I acquired way back. I've heard that installing the adapter is tricky and can slice up your fingers.! However, remember that the original idea was to use a M42/F adapter with my DSLR. the adapter does not work (Urth). It was probably a bad idea.

The K-Mount adapter limits the lens to manual aperture only. I have an ME-Super, and a Ricoh 50/1.4 on it, native K-Mount.

The Pentax ES II was the last screwmount made by the company. The camera is a bit bigger and heavier than the Spotmatics, but the open aperture metering is a nice improvement.

Spotmatic F is a great camera for that lens. Simple operation and open aperture metering for that lens.

If you must have open-aperture metering I would recommend the Spotmatic F. It’s a great camera.

However if you can do without (let’s face it, there’s plenty of metering options available), I’d strongly recommend the pre-Spotmatic ‘S’ series from Asahi Pentax. Personally I think these are some of the nicest mechanical SLR’s ever made. My favourite is the SV, but really there’s not much difference between various models.

The adapter is easy enough to install and remove, but it is important to get a good quality version (genuine Pentax ideally). You can have a lot of issues with crappy ones...

However, personally I wouldn’t recommend using Takumars on a K mount body. You *can*, but it’s a clunky solution that requires manually stopping down for every shot.

Takumars work excellently on M42 bodies, and there’s plenty of exceptional K mount glass to use on the MX. The SMC Pentax 50/f1.4 is basically the SMC Takumar with a bayonet mount.

The Cosina CSR is nice and has spot and average metering as well as an add on unit for aperture priority operation (it is more of a novelty really). The feel is more of a late 70s camera than 60s vintage.

Make sure you stay away from Zenits. One of the lens's pin falls inside a mount screw on the zenits when trying to screw it. This is what happened to me when trying to mount a Takumar 35f/2 on a Zenit.

Older Takumars work fine but with your version of the 50f/1.4 I would definitely avoid it.

Also, read what the manual says about the SMC Takumar 50f1.4. It talks about the previous version of the lens than yours but I would imagine the same applies for your version too.
