I just can not do it... I'm sorry

Yea, sit on it awhile and mull things over is always a good idea.

Thanks to all who have responded, I really didn't expect any responses. Don't get me wrong, I have been waiting for FF cameras for a while and would love to have the M9. I just won't be plunking down 7 Grand for one even if I have the money and can spend it anyway I want. I do see a trip early next year and maybe another lens or three to add to my lens armamentarium.

I think the M9 has reached a price point where actually pulling money out of your back pocket and plunking it down is giving many people pause.

You've just taught us the difference between "want" and "need."

I imagine that if I were in your shoes, I would pay off that final credit card and settle several other minor debts.

That M9 will still be there when you're ready for it.

Actually... if you want FF in digital, the Nikon D700 is looking right now like a very reasonable compromise.

And, speaking from experience, it does work wonders. :)

Congratulations on the tidy Sum and NOT letting it burn a hole in your pocket.

Kind of the same situation. An unexpected Sum shows up enough for an M9. Credit cards paid off, vacation paid off, money in every month for Nikki's college since she was born.

I'm setting it aside in a money maker fund to give myself time to think on this and see how it comes out.

I agree with most of what has been posted. It is a blessing to get such a sudden payment out of the blue, and you do well not to waste the money on one shopping splurge whether it is a Leica M9 or something else.

I also got out of the blue a similar amount from a two-year old "lost" payment to me. It belongs not just to me to spend but I view it my family's money. I cannot and will not use any of this money for photography. I am selling photography equipment to buy what I "want".

Well done.

Francisco- It so happens that I am really considering the D700 and it is a spectacular camera and I happen to have many, many Nikkor lenses.
Brian - great suggestion about the money maker account.
Raid - I, too, consider this as our money and the outlay of such a large amount of money for the M9 that does factor in. Only time will tell.

I am just asking myself, if buying that thing would improve your (or anyones) photography.

This camera will not make someone a better photographer, but will probably deliver higher-quality digital images than either the RD-1 or M8.

It is like asking "Will Ektar 100 make you a better photographer than Kodacolor-X". No, but it will make your prints look better.

Images from my 1992 DCS200ir look pretty good on the Internet.

But I could not print them beyond 5x7 with 1.6Mpixels on the KAF-1600 array.

The M9 with 18MPixel files will produce a much bigger print.

(You can see a couple of Hot pixels. Not bad, this image was made when the camera was 15 years old. Originally, it had zero-defects. That cost, a lot.)

Quite true. But at some point enough really is enough (though all of us will no doubt have a different point at which that's true). I can get fine looking (though not perfect) 19"x13" prints from an 8Mpx camera (and from 35mm scans) and now have 12Mpx and 15Mpx alternatives. Since 19"x13" is as large as I can print for myself that's very much enough for me.

Good thing about the Nikon D700: it will meter with your AI and AIS glass, and it's certified good quality. No case of BGLOD here (that is "Blinking Green Light of Death") which was the case with the D70. Nikon would repair (revive) them for free, because it was their error, but that circumstance kept me away from laying out the plastic for one.

Again, you did well! :)

I figure high-quality prints require 300 dots per inch. That's left over from my Tektronix Phaser IISDx days. So an 8x12 print required a 2400x3600 array. 300DPI is a bit of overkill.

The M9 should have no problem making any Bride quite happy with wedding portraits above the mantle. Beyond 18MPixels- unless you are doing aerial recon, probably not much to be gained.

Frankly I'd save for an S3.

Professionals who promptly bought each professional iiteration of the Pro Nikons and Canons paused when the got to the latest $$$ DSmk3 and D3x too. Besides, you'll want to see what it does in the real world and not get some nasty surprise by being an early adopter anyway....

That little $2,000 camera looks to be pretty sweet, just saying...
