I just wanted to share what happened to me today.

I picked up my R-D1 from Epson HK this afternoon, it was there for RF re-alignment, they have done a very good job but the best part is when they gave me the invoice they told me I had nothing to pay because it took longer than expected (6 weeks instead of 3). Can you believe that, free RF re-alignment from Epson.

Second good news, I sent my M2 for a full CLA in a local shop (Panda Repair Camera in Stanley Street, Central), it is going to take only 10 days to do the job and it will cost me US$80. Unbelievable!

I really love living here!!!

Mr. LEE of Panda has been in the business for donkeys years and is famous for excellent service. He has been repairing my photo equipment for well over 20 years. Once you have had him looking after your gear you won't be using the cowboys in Champagne Court.
 
I have a yashicamat that has a stuck shutter, I wonder if he can help me out with that. Also you think 6 weeks or even 3 weeks is good for a rangefinder alignment that takes at most a few minutes???

The job may be 3 minutes. But you may have to join a queue which is about 2 weeks long!
 
Mr. Lee is a great guy, and is willing to just chat about cameras for ages. He did take longer than expected reassembling my Elmar (note to self: never attempt lens repair without doing research again), but I couldn't really fault him for missing the tiny little thing behind all the other cameras piled up on his workbench.

Max, do you mind sharing some more info about Epson HK's service for the RD-1? I just got one from Matsuiyastore and am a little worried about the warranty.
 
I wonder why not many people do the RF realignment in Hing Wah, the official Leica distributor in HK. Cost? Time?

Because they are no good. Last time I went to see Mr. Lee he was doing realignment of a NEW Leica 50 f1. The owner went back to the distributor, the lens was realigned but still out. The misalignment can clearly be seen when f1 was used. The distributor also indicated further alignment can be done by posting the lens to Germany. But this may take many months. The misalignment was sorted out in a matter of minutes just my adjustments using the oldest method, namely, lupe on groundglass on filmplane.

Leica is not as good as it used to be in terms precision and workmenship. That's why an old hack like yours truly still stick to the older Leicas.

Hi,

Not much to say here, I went to their repair center in Wanchai and they did all the work. They can still fully repair the camera and have most if not all the spare parts (keep in mind that the spare parts are very expensive!!!). You can find all the contact details on their website.

I'm currently based in Singapore; is there any way I can send my cameras to Mr Lee to be repaired and sent back? Or must I be physically present at his shop if I want my cameras to be serviced?

Hahaha! But at least you (we) know he will be in business for as longs as he wants!

Anyway, glad you enjoy life in Hong Kong! Next time you come to Taipei (or will it be Shanghai next) we should hook up for some casual shooting!

Hi,

I doubt Mr Lee will accept cameras from overseas, I can't find is contact details maybe someone else in the HK RFF group can help you, the best bet will be to call him directly if you speak cantonese,

I hope he will be in business for a long time, he is the most knowledgeable and most honest repairman I know in HK.

Definitely, I really enjoyed Taipei, it is a great city with very welcoming and helpful people. Same goes to you, do not hesitate to contact me if you come to HK.
