I met Bruce Gilden last weekend @ Coney Island

If you live in NYC you see many famous people, even if you don't recognize them at first. My best siting was of Robert Frank at 2AM walking along the Bowery carrying a 20 pack of toilet paper.

@whited3
After reading your innocent story of your meeting BG, your photo, in context, is perfect. Thanks for sharing.

Im not sure were this "followed by a paparazzi" came from.. Was it from my comment of taking a few pictures of him..?

I didnt follow him like a "paparazzi", I meant I saw him, and went in his direction, and his comments to me were in jest, he was not mad... I was describing how he is an approachable guy and not an ahole, but it seems like people only read what they want and dont pay attention to certain details of a paragraph..

O well, the internets.

I did read it.

I think that you took my response out of context. NVM

Here's Bruce guys. I won't analyze the shot because I really didn't put any forethought into it (I'm surprised it's almost in focus). Regardless, here's the precise moment I met him:

I think its Sublime...Bruce in Action !
I have met him being one of The Guest Speakers at The Museum of the City of NY last year

He can be quite Charming, Witty with a touch of melancholy... I liked him in person
Not as hyper as he seems 'shooting' on the Street

great that you were able to meet him. i really respect his body of work (Coney Island and Go are extraordinary.. wish i owned the books).

Nice comments about the shot! thanks guys.

It's actually ironic now that I think about it; this is the first photo I've taken in this style ("street" shot, if you will). And I get a kick out of the fact it's of BG. Bruce is an interesting subject and it's as though this snap was served on a platter for me, considering my dumb luck and all.

Is it a flash extension cord for his off camera flash? I may be wrong, I have seen photos of him with a 28mm viewfinder since I think he mainly shoots with 28mm lenses.

I think the photo's great if you know who it is. In a way that makes it a lot more interesting than many of Bruce's own photos.

I had figured that Gilden "developed" his in your face style basically to get attention. I think his older work is nicer - but running around firing flashes in people's faces is a good way to get attention.

My girl and I ate next to Anne Hathaway at Soba Ya awhile back. I didn't even notice her until my girl pointed her out. What I like about NYC, is that people don't really bother "famous people" in these situations.

I have attended Bruce's workshop in London last year. He is good teacher, blunt, harsh and takes no b/s. He is entertaining speaker with plenty of stories behind his photographs but i think that behind macho veneer there is much softer & emphatic person. His late works (Foreclosure in America) with combination of stills, video and narrative is probably his strongest works ever
