I have just bought myself an R-D1X in excellent condition... i can wait to receive it... :D

In the mean time, i need to find some glass to put on the front of it..

I was thinking either the Canon 28mm F2.8 or the Canon 50mm F1.4 for starters... as i dont want to spend to much cash, are these good starter lenses ?? Or can you recommend something else for similar or less money ?

Im looking forward to becoming a regular contributor here...

Thanks

I believe that the crop factor would indicate a "normal" focal length of 35mm. I would recommend a CV lens in that size as a good place to start. I recently bought an M8u and after a lot of fiddling, I settled on a 35mm 1.7 CV. Welcome to the forum!

Those should do well. Also consider the excellent CV lenses 50/2.5 or 50/1.5 (will need a LTM to M adapter). I used to own one of the original RD-1's (about 7 years ago - an age and half in the digi-world) and I am always pleased how well the files hold up when I view them today.

EDIT: just saw Ray's suggestion and it is an excellent one. Probably a better first lens than the two I mentioned, unless your natural vision of the world is in the medium-tele range.

CV 35 mm was my first lens and still the one I mostly use.
If you look for something cheap I would go for the f2.5 instead of the 1.7. It is also smaller and easier to focus wide open (in case your rangefinder is not properly aligned, as it is very likely).

Canon 28/2.8 are getting expensive. I had one on my R-D1 for a while but never fell in love with it.

I use a 28/2.8 M-Rokkor now and love the 60's look...sharp enough but not clinical, neither lacking nor overly contrasty.

i use the cv 35 f1.4 mainly on the r-d1.

here's a picture on emirates flight into pakistan,
captured on the cv f1.4.

Not mad, they're nice looking and pretty good value cameras if you ask me. If 6MP was good enough a few years ago, it's good enough now.

Congrats on the X, I've been thinking of grabbing one lately and just letting it sit in case either my R-D1 or R-D1s dies.

As far as my most used lens it would be the 35mm f/2.5 C.

a vc 28mm f3.5 is a nice compact lens to accompany your outstanding camera, if you are not really after a fast lens

When I had the camera, I used the V.1 35 summicron. Later, I got a Canon 28/2.8 for it which seemed a great fit, but I got rid of the camera shortly after, so I didn't use it that much. I tried a vc 28, but found it too contrasty for my taste. I might have liked something a little wider than the 28's, but I couldn't see not using that great 1:1 viewfinder.

Good luck

By the way,

welcome to the club!! You will L-O-V-E this camera.

Thanks for the welcome and all the lens advice, i just need to buy something before the R-D1x arrives..

I'm really looking forward to getting the camera, and getting closer to photography, which for me is not about the number of pixels on the sensor, it is much more about the look, feel & colour of the pictures and this is reflected in my camera history.

- Minolta X5
- Nikon D70
- Nikon D90 (i hated the colours and returned it after less than 24 hours)
- Fujifilm S5 Pro (love the colours & dynamic range but not the weight)
- Fujifilm X100. (best described as, so near and yet so far from being perfect)

I still have the two Fujis, but the S5 doesn't see much action any more. I enjoy the X100's rangefinder like experience with its optical view finder, but didnt like the fact that you could never be sure what you'd focused on (unless you used the EVF which i dislike immensely). The X100 does take some nice pictures, but its 23mm lens can be a bit limiting and doesn't always take very flattering portraits. So i chose the R-D1 as my next camera.

Once i'm up to speed i hope that i can take some pictures which do justice to the camera.

If you have any hint and tips on how to get the best out of the R-D1 i'd love to hear them.

Thanks

Jamieson

The M-Rokkor 40mm f2 is the perfect lens for the RD1. The 35mm framlines on the camera match very well for 40mm. The FOV conversion to 60mm is close enough to 50mm to use as a normal. Add a CV 4/21mm later and your set!

It's a relatively short while since I sold my RD1 but was a great camera and ended any Leica lust if I had any. As a spectacle wearer I preferred a 28 over a 35 on the RD1. The only lens I own now is the CV15mm which I've been using on my Xpro1. A very good lens but I will be parting with it soon to get the Fuji 14mm.

Enjoy your new toy!

I use a 35 2 Jupiter 12 and like it a lot. I would suggest the inexpensive J12 as a starter and save up for a new Zeiss 35.

Yes, the 40/2 M-Rokkor is the one. But I like the Canon 25/3.5 or CV 28/3.5 to go with it.
