I'd like to buy a handheld meter for my M2, and am pretty much set on getting a Master V, but I am very leery about buying one from the bay especially considering the possibility for a dead/dying selenium cell.

Does anybody have or know of an alternative venue for purchasing a used Master V at?

Go to the Euromaster page and find:

"We are sorry to inform the Euro-MASTER II is currently not available.

Our experienced exposure meter specialists also recommend a wide range of repairs and servicing to all Weston Master & Euromaster exposure meters: Calibration check - £22; Recalibration, servicing and minor adjustments - £36; New photocell fitted, recalibration & servicing - £42; New movement fitted, recalibration & servicing - £55; New photocell & new movement fitted, recalibration & servicing - £66. All prices include UK carriage and VAT."

If buying a Master V (I have a IV and find it very well made), Quality Light and Metric in Los Angeles can do all those repairs as well, for North American customers.

erik, i have a spare Master IV, and am willing to let it go to a good home, price (or lack thereof) not a barrier. it's just back from QLM. just a thought.

I bought mine in the Spring on ebay. I got a good one. Make sure you buy with a return policy in case it turns out to be a beater.

I already blew $22 on a Master II over the last week to find that it is incredibly non-sensitive to light.
I would prefer not to buy a new cell from Megatron and try to install it; spending $50 for a CLA from the lightmeter guys at Quality Light Metric seems superfulous if I could buy a whole new V for the same price.

The reason I now want a V as opposed to the earlier series models is partially due to looks (I like the red on brushed steel) and the fact that the V is calibrated in EV as opposed to Foot-Candles. Now, I'm sure that some of the IIs, IIIs, or IVs might be in EV but I'd just prefer a V.

Thanks

I suggest you go ahead and buy the best looking V you can on eB*y and send it on to Quality Light Metric so George Melton can do his stuff. I sent two Vs out a few months ago and am very happy with the results. The cost was about $75 each and turnaround is very fast. Be sure any meter you get has a intact intercone!

My understanding is that the only difference between the IV and the V is the dial and, of course, the age.

Cheers,
Eli

I'm open to correction here but I think you'll find that the Master V is NOT calibrated in EV. It just has a high range that reads to "16". Foot-candles are actually handy since you can easily calculate your exposure time from them without resorting to the scales.

The Master IV and V are fine meters, just don't expect them to work in very poor light. I have a Master III which does me fine. The Master/Master II (and often III) are all so old that finding a good, working one is not straighforward. I was lucky with the III, it seems to be just about spot-on 🙂

IIRC, as an approximate calibration, they should read about 320 (or 13.5 on a Master V) when pointed to a cloudless sky (not the sun!) within a couple of hours of noon.

I have a weston III i bought on ebay. Needle moves freely but the problem is i dont really know how to use this baby. If i can figure out if it is accurate I'd be willing to sell it for a good offer.
