I don't have a problem with logging in to buy and sell.(that seems fair enough, required even) ...I have a problem with logging in to view.....

Preciscely my point.

As to Jorge's goal - it would seem that allowing viewing w/o being a member would likely entice someone to sign up. Deny access and they are more than likely just going to move on to another "friendlier" site!

You know, this is a relatively small thing. Not a big deal, not the end of the world or the beginning of some new era. It's just a small impact on one section of the site. For those of us running cookies on our machines, there will be no difference. For some others, there may be required registration. Oh boy! Oh no! So what.

RFF is still my favorite digital hang out, for better or for worse. And nothing short of a triple digit membership cost would change that. And this site is still free. . . .don't forget that. It is a privilage that we were even consulted in this, that there is any democracy at all, because as a free site, we really have little legitimate reason to claim any say at all. We might have some sort of socially defined legitimacy, but as for running things by vote. . .that IS special.

Majority rules!

If someone is not a member of RFF I would prefer that they do not view the items that I have for sale here. I could make more on EBay. I prefer selling to active members, not just someone that signs-up because they saw an item that could be resold. Or worse, scam someone out of.

It has certainly happened here before.

And precisely not a very good point. Denying access to anonymous surfers to view for sale listings may well entice them to move on - and that sounds like a good thing to me.

PS - Am I replying to myself yet?

I don't see anything wrong.. I didn't come here to sell gear.. I did after 6 months and because I wanted to dump some of my gear... so still, i don't see what's wrong.. I love to come here to argue about my lovely soviet RFs 😉 not for the classifieds🙂

Bill,

I was commenting on Jorge's stated goal of trying increase the membership with this move and pointing out that his solution is "counterproductive" to that goal.

If you need to comment on something I say - at least stick to the point!

Thanks,
George

P.S. I fully know your views on the matter and choose not to discuss them.

My 2 Eurocent.
If it were Jorges intention to make (more) money through advertising he'd have told us.

As I stated in the other thread, I'm decidedly undecided on this topic.

Since I haven't used my TVS for four month now I think of selling it. If I do it I'd offer it here first but only to members. So I'm fine with Jorges decision.

George and Bill, I think you have to consider the possibility that you 2 are actually twins separated at birth 🙂

Like Schwartzenegger and Divito?

Frank, what in the world led you to that insight? Brilliant! I really think you are on to something. It would explain so much. 😀

As to the issue here, I have neither bought nor sold here and probably won't. My only thought is that I am comfortable with the status quo. I guess I am just an old stoggy who doesn't like change. Darned horseless carraiges and the way their noise scares the horses is something I just can't get over. 😡 😀

This is just not a big issue for me. Now, talk about using a tripod for a lens test, that'll get me going. 🙂

(stand up straight, Bill!) again just 🙂 🙂 🙂

As the cleaning lady said at Oscar Wilde's trial:

"I think people should be allowed to do what they want, as long as they don't do it in the street and frighten the horses."

I view this change as basically making access to the classifieds a benefit of membership. If you want to see what people are offering, join the list. Someone earlier said it well: We want to offer fellow list members attractive deals, not strangers. While being able to view what's for sale might be the best enticement for them to join, at the same time the list is mainly for people who enjoy rangefinder photography. Selling gear to one another is not the main priority of the list.

I understand how this change can be seen as a shift in the philosophy of the list (and I guess it wasn't really discussed beforehand?), but it doesn't trouble me. What would trouble me would be if the list were to be used exclusively for discussion of rangefinders, and any discussion of SLRs, TLRs, P&S, which it seems all of us have in some measure, were banned.
