Ok so it wasn't a rangefinder but still! I work at a camera store and had someone come in to sell a Nikon D70 with lens to us. It seemed odd because he had a camera and lens but no battery or charger or anything else. I checked the card slot and saw a card in it with some writing. As soon as the guy saw the writing he was like Oh wait lemme see that a second. I just brushed him off and said oh don't worry I got it back in, let me just go in the back and find a battery. I then pulled the card out to see what it said and saw that it had a local college's name on it and phone number. I went back out and told the guy he had to come back in a half hour when the buyer was in. I didn't really think he would, but I called the number anyways and talked to the school. They confirmed that 4 cameras were stolen and faxed me the serial numbers and the Police case number. I contacted the police to find out what to do and since they are in another city they said if I was willing, I could call our police if he came back and they could get him.
Well amazingly enough about a 45 minutes later I saw him outside. I told my boss who had been out running errands that he was back and so he stalled the guy while I went in the back and called the police. I then came back out and the guy decided he needed to use the restroom. We let him go in there and then I checked the camera quick against the faxed serials and got a match so I kept stalling and playing with the camera. The guy came back out and thought nothing of it I guess because he was asking all sorts of questions. I even gave the guy a lesson in f-stops and depth of field just to buy time waiting for the police!!!
After a few minutes they arrived and questioned the guy, took my statement, and then arrested him. Off he went in handcuffs!
I called the school back afterwards and told them we had the guy arrested and recovered one of the cameras and that the Police would probably contact them. They were really excited and happy about it!
So yep.. My good deed for the day! YAY!!! 😀 😀 😀 😀
