My mum's 70th birthday dinner today. I had on hand,
5D with 17-35 2.8 L (loaner)
EP-1 with standard zoom
and the R-D1 with the cv 40/1.4
All great cameras but the best shots by far were taken by the R-D1. I should have known

I can understand your comment about the sharpness and colour of the RD-1. I haven't have mine for long, but have already noticed that. For a "mere" six megapixel camera, it does a bloody good job!

It's rare that I see bad RD1 images posted in these forums. It is certainly a very capable camera.

As much as i like the Epsons i prefer the 5D with R lenses when i need more resolution.

wow, very nice. interestingly, i also had a 5d, rd1, and ep1 (my wife's) with me this weekend. i'm still more comfortable with the 5d, it's good to see how capable the rd1 is in the right hands.

Absolutely brilliant John. The colours the Epson divulges has always been one of my favourite aspects of the camera. Probably not surprising when you come to think of Epson's main field of expertise. Imagine if Adobe where to do the same, what traits would the camera have?
You do have the added advantage of the glass too, I suspect none of my Nikkors are anywhere near my CV or Hexanon lenses. The OOF rendering especially, which your portraits benefit from.
The D2X will most likely be swapped for something else sometime, the R-D1 will be staying.

Thanks for all the kind words.
I was loaning the 5D because my 20D after many years of faithful sports use finally decided to err99 and now fires off the shutter constantly as soon as it is turn on. From what I can find out it appears to be the sign of a broken shutter. Great camera but not worth spending more than a couple of hundred to fix and I think it will be more than that.
So I'm eyeing off a 7D for sport and work. Seems very good value for the spec...

Not to jump on the bandwagon, but I guessed (before I saw the other's answers) that #3 at least had to be the RD-1, if not for the general rendition, but for the OOF areas from a lens shot wide open. As we see the gent on the right is OOF but the lady is in focus, and they are close together. I thought #1 and #2 could be either the 5D or the EP-1, but #2 seems to lack something, maybe density or .......je ne sais quoi....... I figured the EP-1 would be more lacking than the 5D............ so that #2 is probably EP-1.
My only real experience to go on is that I have owned the RD-1s for 3 months now, and love it. I owned the EP-1 for 2 weeks and took it back. I was pissed b/c I expected to be able to use my Leica glass with great results, but I was disappointed, so returned it.

If that center image is ultimately the EP-1 ... it certainly doesn't give me gas for the camera!
