It does look a little dirty in the pics, and that maybe a dog chewed on the filter threads a little. But it's said to just have some cleaning marks, and it's been Oleg'd...so what's the deal, why didn't anyone else bid?

What I like to think is that y'all saw my name on the auction and had pity on me in my state of recovery, and let me have it, but come on...

With shipping it was only $46. Less than half of the one at Fedka without shipping. Well, I'll let you know soon how it truly is. I've wanted one for a loooong time.

What camera do you plan to use it on? I don't believe that Oleg reshims them the way that Kim or Brian does. Perhaps you'll want to contact one of them about the shimming.

Hey William,
Probably will spend most of its time on my beloved Fed 3b. The lens test the ebay seller did there seemed like it yielded decent-enough results. Yeah, if it's screwed up, I know I can try to get on the schedule of some of our experts.

What would be the difference between the methods of shimming?? 28.8mm is the same no matter how its shimmed?

If it's on a Fed, you'll be a happy camper, I think. I just noticed the "old leica" in the .sig and thought I would ask. Enjoy! I know I love my reshimmed one.

Congrats on your kiev mount J-3. Just joking. I bet that scared you a bit. 🙂

I got my J-3 for $30 USD shipped and it works perfectly other than a relube. 😀 I think people are turned off by the fact that it's not mint, especially the optics. Minor scratches on the lens don't bother me. This article made a lot of sence to me. Fungus is a different story.

The only thing that concerns me with your J-3 is the part where you screw on the filter. It looks a little bent. If it is, you might not be able to fit a hood or a filter on it. I hope I'm wrong but if it is.......send me a PM. I might have a solution for ya. It involves a sock and a small vice grip plier. 😱

"What would be the difference between the methods of shimming?? 28.8mm is the same no matter how its shimmed?" I think they were talking about the actual lens being properly shimmed, not the lens-flange to film plane distance. 🙂

AH, I see . Just interpreted it different........but Oleg has the service of cleaning lubing and adjusting lenses, seperately from the cameras. Probably some one sends him a camera with lens attached and only specifies the camera CLA thinking the lens is included in the CLA. I sent him a Zorki 1 and specified the lens be done too, came back 100%.........

Did anybody invite that seller to join RFF?

Did you read his answer on whether the lens will work on a DLSR? Our kind of photographer.

The lens should work fine. It should take filters. If not, the metal is soft enought that some needle-nodes pliers can be used to "shape" it back into place. Carefully, though.

That's a good idea. I'm going to let him know when the lens arrives, I'll extend an invite. Ooooh maybe today 🙂

Lens arrived today. Much much nicer than in the ebay pics. Cleaning marks? Darned if I can find a single one. It accepts my screw-in filters just fine. Focus/aperture smooth. Taking her out tomorrow. So psyched. I have a J3. Oh, and indeed invited seller, "John," to join us on RFF. Haven't heard back yet.

Congratulations on spotting that J3! The seller John Wilton has a pretty cool site with information not found elsewhere like why the Elmar 90/4 doesn't work on some FSUs.

I'm very tickled with the lens. I like that extra stop! I was able to linger at Valley Forge (right near my office) a little longer this evening, after all the other photogs had gone. The door and stoop are the front entrance to George Washington's HQ. The reloading shot was done with my XA. The girl is...just crazy 🙂 I got tons of flare though. I don't know why I think *I* don't need a hood...

Dave,
The lens must be shimmed to 28.8 to make sure the lens is correctly focussed at infinity. It must also be correctly shimmed between the lens groups to ensure that it is correctly focussed throughout the range. It is this second problem that mostly affects the J3's.
