The Star City Cruisers put on their 47th Annual Car and Bike Show at the VeteransAdministrationMedicalCenter in Salem, VA. It’s always a nice mix of vehicles, and this year Mission BBQ, a local restaurant that supports veterans, served up the eats.

Okay, now the question is do you think I'm getting used to the D300s? The only thing I did to these photos was crop for Internet display, and fix a few shadow details.

For them to show up that sharp on my crappy office monitor, I would say you are very used to it.

My only question to you is why shoot at ISO200?
In that much sun 100 would have been OK.

I enjoyed looking at the flikr pics too.

Farlymac;

On another thread you said you found that newer Nikon DX lenses wouldn't work on your D300s and, that you would need a newer D7500 in order to use them. I left a post asking which new DX lenses had this (you didn't say why) problem. My post/question went unanswered. Please let me know about these "problem, incompatible lenses".

Thanks, pkr

FX lenses will work on D300. I use a 35 2.0 AFD as a normal, 24 as slight wide.

any Ai or Ais or lens converted to Ai will work with manual focus

Thanks ..

I've used both older and newer Nikon digital/film gear. I'm familiar with Dandelion Chipping
older AI - AIs lenses.

The question was about "newer DX lenses" and their compatibility with a D300s. I would really like to know about this problem, and... the need for the latest DX bodies (D7500) for use of the "newer DX lenses".

Maybe, reread post #6 for clarification ??

Hopefully, farlymac will answer my question..

My hope is that I will be happy enough when Nikon releases a FF Mirrorless body with a great EVF that takes AI glass.

But that's me.

I think they are working on an EVF camera for FX, DX. I would hope for a hybrid OVF/EVF. Both Nikon and Canon are heavily driven by sports photographers. Those guys have high visibility on TV and both Cos advertise at major sporting events. Sports guys want OVF until EVF gets as fast. At least, that's what I'm told.

Nikon is doing some reorganizing of it's camera lineup. I think they say.. fewer, better cameras. The D850 is a great start. Not something I need, but I like to see them do well with their products.

The way things are going, we may only have 3-4 camera companies in a few years. Fuji is in for the long haul I hope.

Sorry, I wasn't ignoring you, sometimes don't keep good track of all my posts.

I was referring to the new AF-P DX line of lenses, specifically the 10-20mm model so I would have a wide-angle zoom. It's less expensive than the older AF-S DX version, or any of the third party models. It's the pulse motor technology used in the AF that causes the incompatibility issues with older cameras. You have to read the fine print on Nikons web site to see the list.

My thoughts on this is it would be great if styled as a compact, with a fixed mount zoom that retracts fully into the body for portability, along with an excellent EVF. While they are at it, they could design one to be a knock-off of the S2-SP-S3-S4 rangefinders so I could use my S mount glass on it. Then they could make an F styled one, as long as they ditch all the buttons, unlike what they did to the Df.

To me 200 is a good compromise ISO when going back and forth from bright to shadow/shade, and while using fill flash in the engine and passenger compartments.

Thanks, i'll look at the Nikon site. So, the pulse stepper motor won't talk to older bodies? Do you know where the cut-off is on compatibility?

I read the Nikon USA site info and DPR and didn't see any issues with older bodies. I understand stepper firmware may be an issue. Maybe the older bodies need an update? But, I found no notices about that lens. Was there another lens in question? Let me know and i'll contact Nikon about this. Can you direct me to the "small print" you found?

Thanks, pkr

Thanks. I read through the doc. It looks like the issue is menu/firmware with the newer stepper AF lenses. Firmware updates will solve the problem for some bodies, they don't say which, but older hardware is not compatible. It looks like Nikon is saving money by eliminating the external VR and MF/AF switches on their lenses.

In my tilting toward DX lenses for work, I've looked to sources other than Nikon for good optics. There's lots of stuff around. I'm not big on zooms, but use them. MF chipped lenses are a good choice.

You're interested in WA lenses. WA on a DX body doesn't need AF. Set DOF per aperture and you're set. I sometimes tape the focus ring on a MF lens, so it doesn't wander while I'm working.

You might want to look at good optics for your sensor size.

With the sensor resolution of the D300s, you have lots of lens choices.

Thanks again for following up. I knew about firmware issues, but didn't know about the stepper problem with older bodies. The D300s is a good camera. Be sure to buy quality batteries and cards.

I haven't tried one of these, but would like to test one. Inexpensive!
