You haven't even touched the X100 and already folks are picking out bags, taking apart the aperture ring, debating the image quality. I do not remember any other camera being fawned over like this, except maybe the Minolta 7000 (just kidding). Of course Fuji, I am sure, planned this by hinting, pre-announcing, and bating us for months. But boy we have fallen for it, hook, line and sinker. And yes, of course, I am excited, too.
Don't forget the extra batteries and chargers so they can use it the second it comes in the mail.
That said, I will be one of the "beta testers" and am excited. However, accessories can wait, I can wait through a battery charge, and I can even wait in line if I don't get the camera on the first shipment. I still have other cameras that work well.

I had avoided viewing any of the X100 threads, until I looked in briefly yesterday. The frenzy is pretty hilarious. Given all the to-do, I imagine that the inevitable "will-such and such brand wrist strap on the X100 make my butt look fat" thread will materialize soon

Surely Fuji did it well, and I'm glad about the success in sales both for the company and the sellers: we all need this kind of things as photographers. And Fuji rocks. The sensor on S3 and S5 Pro is a marvel. The camera is very nice and all this is well deserved.

What will they all do when they find out it's just a big point & shoot that can't fit in their pocket?

Just because we here at RFF have monocles, drink with our pinky out and wear shirts that say "POSH", it doesn't make us different then any other photography forum. You haven't even touched the X100 and already folks are picking out bags, taking apart the aperture ring, debating the image quality. If they're like me, they'll take it with them wherever they go just like I did with my Canonet QL-17 and my ZI-M with a Biogon 35/2.

Yes they have.
And they do it over and over, each time a new product is announced.
There is probably a good metaphor for this recurring frenzy.
