I wanna be Don Draper's neighbor... SPOILER ALERT!
First episode of the new season of Madmen, Don invites a neighbor to visit his office to pick up a gift. He unlocks a closet and emerges with a new-in-the-box Leica M4. 1967; first year of production. :"Here's your camera.... You'll need a couple of weeks to get through the instructions." Interestingly, the gift is just a body, no lens.

It was an M2, which is funny because we're now in 1967 and the M4 had been released. Don describes the M2 as "the best one", he may have just been giving the guy some shtick but oh well.
The other thing that had me scratching my head was if SCDP has the Leica account and as Don said "a closet full of them" why the hell was Megan using a crappy little Kodak Instamatic?

Ah, your eye is sharper than mine. I stand corrected. Still, I'd take an NIB M2.

The Rollei 2.8 was nice to look at as well, although I did get a chuckle out of the phot assistant using a selenium meter as an incident one.

Thinking about it: the episode is the week between Christmas 1966 and New Year's Day 1967. When did Leica officially release the M4. It hit the market in 1967, but when??? Hm? Nevertheless, the question about Megan's Instamatic still might make one wonder. However, I don't see Megan as an Leica user.
We got a Leica, a Rollei, Weston meter and an Instamatic in the first hour.

Did some of those Weston's have incident attachments? It sure looked as if he was taking an incident reading with a reflective meter.

I like how it was going to take a whole week to read the instructions
I was also thinking, was it just the body or body and lens ?

Rob you might be right, I assumed we were starting at the end of 67, but it makes more sense to start at the end of 66. Which would mean the M4 wasn't out yet, and SCDP may be prepping for the M4 launch.
And that certainly was a reflective meter haha

First super bowl, too. I wonder how big an audience ad agencies were expecting?

The incident attachment for the Weston is an Invercone!

an oddly dropped detail. i imagine the fact that it's not an m4 will return later in the season. i also wonder where the lens was. the doc is going to get home and go WTF that jerk gave me a bad camera AND no lens!
also, bonus points for shooting don off the tripod.

Did you notice they were 35mm slides even tho Megan used an Instamatic - a camera that shoots square format shots on 126 format film.
Having seen the last two minutes of the show, wanting to be his neighbor might not be so great after all.

LOL to the last comment by Franz
It was definitely an M2 - maybe the show didn't care about minutae like that but I'm guessing they DO, because they go so far as to clothe the female actors in period underwear, so the clothes 'fit' right.
I got a long clear look at the box, definitely M2...funny I thought the M4 wasn't until later. I stand corrected!
Oh, and the show took place in the Xmas before the "Summer of Love"...that would make it December 1967, no?
