I know you have settled on tumblr, but if you have a flickr account, give ihardlyknowher.com a try. you link it with your flickr and it simply posts the photos in the same order as your feed. clicking them redirects to your flickr account I believe.
I have mine set up at ihardlyknowher.com/lueeej (my flickr name.)
adding a /big to the end formats the page to show larger photos, e.g. ihardlyknowher.com/lueeej/big

This reply is probably redundant as you've chosen a platform for image display.
I've just begun a blog which is not image-centric but does have a photo section.
I decided on WordPress because I felt it afforded me the greatest flexibility for both text and images.
Keep this in mind should you choose in future to
"colour outside the lines" and extend your project into
a more general purpose affair: articles, comments, rants and etc.
